From Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker/photographer Lauren Greenfield, Social Studies is a character-driven documentary series that delves into the lives of the first generation raised on social media.

Filmed in Los Angeles over a school year, this groundbreaking social experiment features a diverse group of LA teens who open up their lives and phones to offer an intimate glimpse into how social media has reshaped childhood. From battling bullying, grappling with beauty standards, coping with racism, exploring sexuality, navigating the pressures of constant comparison, and making life-altering decisions, their compelling and relatable experiences take us on a raw, visceral, and urgent journey through the challenges of growing up in the digital age.

As part of their commitment to empowering kids, parents, and teachers to develop greater media literacy and learn more about how social media impacts us individually and as a society, director Lauren Greenfield and her Social Studies project team have teamed up with Newton North Digital Literacy Coordinator Rob Greenfield, the Annenberg Foundation, and Annenberg Learner to create a 12-part Educational Curricula for teachers and their students, and an 11-part Parents Guide for parents and their kids.

Our students are dealing with many challenges throughout high school, many of which are directly affected by technology and social media. Students have much to say and teach us about growing up with social media and technology. By giving students space to discuss complicated issues, both good and bad, that center around social media, we can help students handle and overcome the challenges that come with navigating the digital components of contemporary childhood.

As parents, it can be difficult to judge when to give our children independence and when to jump in and help them. The integration of social media into childhood has created a whole new set of parental challenges. When do we allow them to get a smartphone and social media? How do we know they are using social media in a way that is healthy? How do I know if my kid is struggling?
