The most promising path for scalably small refrigeration is with semiconductors called transverse thermoelectrics, but current models of their electronic behavior cannot explain their experimentally observed properties. New research by Professor Matthew Grayson provides the missing framework to model and improve these materials by showing that the so-called band gap in transverse thermoelectric materials changes with temperature and by developing a new method to measure that gap directly. This work - featured on the inside cover of the Journal of Materials Chemistry A - leads to a better understanding and optimization of transverse thermoelectrics could enable compact cooling for sensors, data centers, and, eventually, quantum computers. The Institute for Quantum Information Research and Engineering (INQUIRE) caught up with Professor Kate S. and discussed the QuantA Lab's work on the architecture and software stack for quantum computing systems, including research focused on runtime challenges such as quantum error management, quantum error detection and mitigation, and quantum error correction. During the next five years or so, Smith expects the potential of quantum error detection to blossom, providing ever more intelligence about and capability for quantum systems. “Quantum error correction, of course, is something that will be necessary for utility-scale quantum computing,” she says. “Coming up with better compilation techniques for quantum error correction and logical qubits, that’s something that we’re really interested in. ⭐ Yi Yang, Connie W. Chau, and Vaidehi Srinivas attended the EECS Rising Stars Workshop 2025, hosted in the fall by MIT and Boston University. They were among the 70 graduate students, doctoral-level scholars, and postdocs selected to join the two-day intensive workshop focused on navigating the early stages of academic careers in electrical engineering, computer science, and artificial intelligence. 💫 Yi is a research associate in the research groups of Professors Ted Sargent and Mercouri Kanatzidis. Connie is a fifth-year PhD student in Northwestern's Technology and Social Behavior program and member of Professor Maia Jacobs’s NU-PATH Lab.
