LiveJournal 20 years
MAR 18 1999
Amateur programmer Brad Fitzpatrick has started working on the project. Brad started it for himself to keep his classmates up to date on his plans for the day, as well as keep in touch with the remaining classmates in Oregon.
I just got bored at school. I needed a project I could work on. It was a good way to talk to friends. I moved from Portland to Seattle. And there were friends in Portland I didn't want to lose touch with.

First mention of Frank the goat, LiveJournal mascot
Frank is our mascot. He helps us with random programming when we get behind, and occasionally he answers tech support requests. Frank's really quite versatile.... he even does the yardwork sometimes. When the lawn gets overgrown we go, "Hey Frank! It's lunch time.... go eat the lawn!". It's really a win-win situation.

The word "lytdybr" was invented
So, "lytdybr" - what is it? This is LJ-slang. The source of the word is well known: if you write the word "дневник" (a "diary" in Russian) without switching the keyboard register from Latin to Russian (and in the usual Russian layout), you will get lytdybr; translating back to Cyrillic, we get the "лытдыбр".

The «albansky» language created
American LJ-user scottishtiger saw a text in russian (in entry of onepamop) and asked why on american site livejournal.com somebody posts in unknown language and what language is it.
LJ-user maxxximus called «unknown» language albanian.
In russian-speaking part of LJ a flashmob "Learn Albanian!" started, urging american to learn "albanian" (russian) language.
In a couple days scottishtiger recieved thousands comments with "albanian lessons" and flood. User was suggested to excuse and make a post in russian that he learned albanian, and scottishtiger did so.
Do you know Albanian? Translate «Përshëndetje. Si jeni?»
