What is a Dominican priest?

A Dominican priest is a Catholic priest who serves the Church through preaching, sacramental ministry, and pastoral care. Like all priests, he is ordained to celebrate the sacraments, proclaim the Gospel, and accompany the faithful. What distinguishes him is the particular mission he receives from the Dominican Order because he is a friar: to preach for the salvation of souls.

Not all Dominican friars are ordained priests, however. Some friars make profession in the Order electing to spend their lives as consecrated religious without receiving ordination. In the Order these friars are known as cooperator brothers.

A priest sent to preach Christ

At the heart of the Dominican priest’s vocation is preaching. A Dominican priest is sent to share the Gospel in a way that speaks to real lives. He opens the Scriptures, helps people understand their faith more deeply, and strives to show how the truth of Christ brings healing, hope, and meaning. His preaching is not simply an academic exercise. It grows out of prayer, reflection, and a sincere desire to lead others to God.

But because he is a priest, a Dominican priest is also a pastor of souls. He celebrates the Eucharist, hears confessions, baptizes, anoints the sick, and walks with people in moments of joy and difficulty. He listens carefully to their questions, helps them form their conscience, and offers guidance rooted in the mercy of Christ. His priesthood is shaped by the belief that every person deserves to be met with patience and understanding.

A priest for the whole Church

Because the Order serves the worldwide Church, a Dominican priest can be sent wherever he is needed: to a parish, a mission, a university, a hospital, a retreat center, or a place of evangelization. Whether he is preaching to a large community or sitting quietly with someone who is suffering, his purpose remains the same—to make Christ known and loved.

A Dominican priest tries to reflect Christ the Good Shepherd. He speaks Truth with charity, teaches the faith with clarity, and approaches people with compassion. His life is dedicated to leading others toward the peace and freedom that only God can give. In a world filled with questions and uncertainty, he stands as a preacher of hope, bringing the light of Christ to every place where people search for meaning and grace.
