A Documentary Approach

Hi! I’m Philip Thomas. With a unit stills (film/TV) + press background, I work quietly and precisely. I’ll guide family photos and a few relaxed portraits when needed, then step back and let the day unfold naturally—capturing candid emotion, meaningful details, and the story as it truly happened.

As a San Antonio wedding photographer, my work is rooted in storytelling and observation, capturing heartfelt, candid moments as they unfold. A former press photographer in the UK, I apply that skill set and philosophy to document weddings organically, avoiding clichés and focusing on genuine, in-the-moment emotion.

Wedding photojournalism means stepping back, observing, and knowing when to take the shot. Aside from a few posed couples and bridal party or family photos, I won’t direct, intrude, or take cheesy pictures. I let the day flow naturally while anticipating and preserving meaningful, unscripted moments.

Originally from the UK, I’ve called San Antonio home since 2006. Honored as one of the best San Antonio wedding photographers by The Knot and inducted into their Hall of Fame, I also serve clients in Houston, Austin, Dallas, the UK, and destinations worldwide.

MORE FAQ HERE

01.

Do you travel for weddings?

Yes, absolutely. I photograph weddings throughout Texas and beyond.

02.

How far in advance should we book?

Most couples book 6–18 months in advance, but feel free to reach out anytime to check your date.

03.

Do you pose couples at all?

Yes, I always take a few portraits of the couple and those must-have group shots. I keep them quick and relaxed, so you can get back to enjoying your day. My heart lies in a documentary approach—quietly observing and capturing the real, unfiltered moments as they naturally unfold.

04.

Do you work with a second photographer?

When needed, yes. I can bring a trusted second shooter depending on your timeline and coverage needs.

THE STYLE

Always Chasing the Light

I love capturing quiet moments using both film and digital Leica rangefinders, as well as my large-format Mamiya RZ67. The images I create have a natural, timeless, and moody feel—especially in black and white. The Leica matches how I see the world: small, discreet, and deeply intuitive.

I’m inspired by so much—classic painters, photojournalists, street photographers, and the great documentary masters. Henri Cartier-Bresson and Garry Winogrand, especially, have shaped my approach to storytelling with their focus on stillness and timing. Their work showed me the power of patience and how to frame not just what’s happening, but how it feels.

Unscripted in-between moments

My approach to San Antonio wedding photography is rooted in honesty and observation. I photograph weddings across Texas and beyond, but what truly draws me in are those fleeting, in-between moments—unscripted, raw, and full of emotion. Geometry and light shape my images, but it’s the human connection that brings them to life.

Ignore me, pretty please

Of course, I’ll capture your group portraits and family formals—but that’s just one small part of your story. The real magic happens in the in-between: the laughter, stillness, tears, and joy that unfold on their own.
The best part? You don’t have to perform. Just be yourselves and stay present while I quietly capture it all. Feel free to ignore me when you can—I’ll be there when you need me. All I ask is your trust.
You can see what that looks like in my galleries.

Hotel Havana has to be one of my favorite San Antonio hotels to capture weddings. The hotel is like stepping into the tropical allure of the hotel’s Caribbean namesake.

Here’s a set of my favorite images from Judy and Alex’s wedding at The DeBruce in New York. The DeBruce is nestled in 600 acres of grounds along Willowemoc Creek and features hiking trails, ponds, and views of the Catskills mountains. I hope the pictures I took show just how breathtaking it is.
