We are hiring an experimental research assistant within the Quantum Light and Matter group at Durham, working on quantum sensing with ultracold molecules in optical tweezer arrays. This 3-year position is funded by the "UK-Canada quantum for science research collaborations" scheme and there will be opportunities to travel to Canada as part of a researcher exchange program with the University of Waterloo.

We are looking for a PhD candidate to work on challenges related to superconducting spintronics as part of the project “Flexible Superconducting Spintronics: Geometric control of low-dissipation, long-distance information processing (SuperFlex)”, funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The candidate will enroll in the PhD program at the Department of Physics, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, within the group lead by Sol Jacobsen.

The project

Quantum networks require complex software infrastructures to manage entanglement distribution, synchronization, classical signaling, and multi-node coordination. Thus, it remains a critical need for software-engineered models that can be simulated, validated, and compared at scale. This PhD focuses on quantum network software engineering supporting realistic evaluation of quantum Internet architectures.

What You’ll do

The project

Future quantum computers will operate as distributed systems interconnected by quantum networks. In such systems, software layers must reason jointly about quantum computation and network-provided entanglement. However, current quantum software stacks largely abstract away the network, assuming ideal connectivity and ignoring dynamic network constraints.

The appointment is expected to start on 1 June 2026; the start date and salary are negotiable.
