DAW Firms Under Private Equity Ownership

  • Avid Technology (Pro Tools): Acquired by STG (Symphony Technology Group) in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $1.4 billion. This deal took the company private, removing it from public stock exchanges.

  • Native Instruments & iZotope: These brands, which produce production software and tools often integrated with DAWs, are owned by Francisco Partners. They were merged under the "Soundwide" umbrella (along with Plugin Alliance and Brainworx) following Francisco Partners' acquisition of Native Instruments in 2021.

  • PreSonus (Studio One): While technically a subsidiary of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (acquired in late 2021), Fender itself is majority-owned by the private equity firm Servco Pacific. In early 2026, Fender rebranded PreSonus's flagship DAW as Fender Studio Pro.

  • Image-Line (FL Studio): Majority-owned by Hg, a specialist private equity firm that invested in the company to support its international growth and expansion of its lifetime free updates model.

  • Magix Software (Samplitude, Sequoia, ACID Pro): Managed under the ownership of private equity-backed structures following various restructuring phases to stabilize its creative software portfolio.

  • And now latest, Reason Studios (equity firm around 2020) taken over by Landr.

  • And Luna is basically a platform for selling plugins.
