Brandon Walsh (University of Virginia) has released Embedded Pedagogies: Digital Humanities Teaching and the Infrastructure of Change as an open-access volume through Open Book Publishers. From the book abstract:

This volume offers a timely and incisive exploration of teaching in an era of institutional instability and political pressure. Drawing on extensive experience as a digital humanities practitioner and administrator, Walsh argues that teaching does not occur solely in the classroom but is deeply shaped by the policies, structures, and values embedded within universities themselves.

Focusing on the concept of ‘embedded pedagogies’, the book reveals how institutional norms, such as claims to neutrality, intellectualism, and future-orientation, quietly shape what and how educators can teach. Walsh combines theory with practical insight, using case studies, digital projects, and firsthand reflections to demonstrate how these forces operate and how they can be challenged.

Organized around four core institutional values—knowability, neutrality, intellectualism, and the future—the book provides both critical analysis and actionable strategies. It offers guidance for educators seeking to navigate and transform hostile or resource-constrained environments, advocating for pedagogies grounded in transparency, collective care, and social justice.

Ultimately, Walsh presents a compelling vision of teaching as a form of institutional intervention. By making visible the hidden pedagogies of higher education, this book empowers educators to reimagine their roles and to work collaboratively toward more equitable, sustainable, and hopeful futures for universities and their communities.

This volume will be of particular interest of information professionals who teach as part of their work. UVA Libraries is hosting a book launch on October 5, 2026. The event will be virtual and free to attend, but there are a limited number of seats available.

In the July 2026 issues of the Journal of Palestine Studies, Maya Mikdashi (Rutgers University – New Brunswick) authored, “Archives, Prophecy, and Return: The Phoenix of Gaza,” an open-access review of the virtual reality project, The Phoenix of Gaza. Mikdashi explores multiple scenes from the project that serve as portals drawing in in her own personal stories from growing up in Lebanon, relating with her Ojibwe ancestry, and facing the contradictions of universities perpetuating legacies of settler colonialism. She explores the relationship between Indigenous studies and Palestine studies, and considers citational and historical conversation around archives, futurity, history, and colonial epistemology. She notes, “The Phoenix of Gaza is one of these acts of Palestinian storytelling, of ‘ordinary people narrating extraordinary things.’ This creation of an archive is a radical act of refusal against erasure, and it is also an insistent, prophetic announcement of futures that may still yet unfold.” Further:

The Phoenix of Gaza offers a trespass into a capacious feeling of the familiar, from Lebanon to the United States. It offers a detour from the archives of states in search of the paper that accumulates and is inherited, the paper that lives in expectation of becoming evidence, the paper and videos and photographs that speak to the corrosive need for evidence to prove that your life and death, and that of your people matter. As its cocreator Ahlam Muhtaseb relayed yesterday, it is crushing to create an archive of life in Gaza only for it to be used as an archive of war crimes and genocide—only for it to become evidence. So many of the sites we visit through the portal of The Phoenix of Gaza—historic sites and lived sites—have been destroyed. And yet, The Phoenix of Gaza also shows us how they will be rebuilt, that life and death are woven together through everyday experience and everyday acts of commitment.

Mikdashi’s review affirms how virtual reality digital humanities projects can intervene in the digital cultural record through decolonial digital storytelling, bridging transformative personal and embodied experiences with archives and preserving memory for the future.

Submissions are invited for the Critical Digital Archives: Travel, Translation, Transformation: A Hybrid Symposium on Archives in and from the SWANA Region, to take place January 21-22, 2027, at the Senate House in London. From the call:

This symposium aims to provide a forum for scholars, archivists, community and cultural organizations interested in critical approaches to digital archives containing materials from and about the SWANA (Southwest Asia and North Africa) region, understood as a geographic, historical, and cultural space. In this space, archives have been historically imposed, looted, extracted, dispersed, destroyed, but also rescued, rebuilt and reinvented, pioneering practices of resistance, reparation and return that raise compelling ethical, theoretical and practical questions for scholars and stakeholders (Ghaddar, 2025). Building on Itza Carbajal and Michelle Caswell’s framework (2021), our approach seeks to advance a language-sensitive understanding of reparative archival practices that are attentive to and accountable for the technological, social, and environmental impacts of digital archives. We are interested in digitisation as a transformative process that reshapes archival practices, knowledge production, and power relations. Conceived as a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and horizontal forum, the symposium invites participants, both in person and online, to engage in discussion and exchange around three interconnected themes and interpretative lenses. Two keynote speakers – Sara Salem (LSE) and Amanda Egbe (UWE) – will act as discussants, facilitating collective reflection and dialogue around participants’ contributions. The three themes of the symposium are Travel,: Archives in Movement; Translation: Languages in the Archives; and Transformation: Digital Futures and Ethics of Dematerialization.

Libraries in the Digital Age (LIDA) has released a call for submissions for their 2027 conference in Šibenik, Croatia, from May 19-21, 2027. As the call explains,

The LIDA 2027 conference explores questions prompted by the major transformations of memory institutions in the age of artificial intelligence with two inter-related themes: “Artificial Intelligence and Ethical Institutional Response” and “Emotion and Creativity.” In the age of artificial intelligence, technological, philosophical, and humanistic values are becoming intertwined. This presents new opportunities and challenges for memory institutions while encouraging a deeper understanding of the role of emotion and creativity in designing spaces for reflection on, and even counter-response to, artificial intelligence.

The Undergraduate Journal of Digital Humanities has released a call for journal and blog submissions. According to their website, the journal is

the first digital humanities publication for undergraduates. Based at Yale University, we are dedicated to publishing student research in the field at a time when digital technologies are becoming increasingly important in society, academia, and global affairs.

Submissions may be written in English or Spanish. Journal submissions for the Fall 2026 issue are due October 1, 2026, whereas blog submissions are accepted on a rolling basis.

The 2027 International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) Online Meeting will be held January 26-28, 2027. The event organizers are looking for proposals that center around the theme, “Working and Learning,” as an opportunity to showcase new and innovative IIIF projects, implementations, developments, and tools, as well as to learn new skills. From the call:

Lightning Talks: We encourage showcasing developments in IIIF and in particular would welcome presentations in the following areas:

• IIIF implementations featuring unique or uncommon collections
• Using IIIF material for Machine Learning and AI

Workshops: Workshop submissions must have an abstract, a proposed outline schedule, and desired outcomes (e.g., “at this end of this session, participants will be able to place IIIF manifests on a web map”, or “at the end of this session, participants will be able to use IIIF manifests to create guided storytelling exhibitions”). This year, we are seeking workshop proposals aimed at end users, researchers, and educators as well as workshops for experienced IIIF practitioners.

The fourth annual Latin American & Caribbean Digital Humanities Symposium took place from September 8-10, 2026, in person at UT San Antonio, with the virtual symposium taking place next week, September 21-23, 2026. The symposium is guided by the theme “Transfronteras: Third Spaces in Digital Humanities,” which invites participants to reflect on and discuss digital humanities as terceros espacios / third spaces. Border feminist scholar Gloria Anzaldúa (1987) describes the borderlands as a liminal and hybrid space produced through the meeting of different cultures and identities—an in-between zone where new meanings emerge, where those
living at the margins can find belonging, and where dominant narratives can be challenged and transformed. Similarly, her concept of nepantla, understood as a “lugar de en medio,” names a state of transition and ambiguity experienced at geographic, cultural, and identity borders. Rooted in a Náhuatl term, Anzaldúa reinterprets nepantla as a transformative liminal space crucial to the formation of new identities.

Understanding digital humanities as a third space—as nepantla—allows us to recognize a wide range of collaborative efforts across disciplines, cultures, skills and knowledges, languages, communities, and geographies. These efforts have created counter-spaces and alternative models: communities, teams, projects, and ideas within and beyond academia that respond to contest, and challenge dominant narratives. Attentive to local, transborder, transnational, and personal borders, we welcome reflections on work shaped by adversity, mistakes, failures, violence, rupture, and change, and on how such moments become sites for navigating borders through inquiry, creativity, transgression, and transformation.

We embrace the slow, the incomplete, and the pause as productive practices that connect, nourish, and cultivate workflows integrating the humanities and the digital in pursuit of more just and livable worlds. This year’s theme encourages contributors to share lessons learned about transborder digital humanities as commitment, as impact, and as ongoing collaboration with individuals, communities, and teams across borders in times of continual evolution.

The Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH) has announced a series of eleven online training opportunities that explore fundamental data management and computational methods in digital humanities: Building Digital Skills for the Arts and Humanities. The series is aimed at researchers of all types who are new to the field, and it is free and open to all. Each training takes place between 1:30-3:00 PM CEST (7:30-9:00 AM EST), with recordings and materials provided after each session.

The National Humanities and Social Sciences Team at the Digital Research Alliance of Canada has launched a training series. According to the series’ site, the workshops

are designed to take researchers and students in the humanities and social sciences through the different stages of the research process, introducing them to digital tools and research approaches relevant to each stage. The training series includes workshops on digital longevity, cloud computing, programming in R and python, data cleaning and analysis software, and data repositories. Most workshops are open to participants of all skill levels; where there are prerequisites, these will be listed in the workshop description.

The workshop series is online and free to attend. The series begins in September 22, 2026 and runs through March 16, 2027.

Responsibilities

Works closely with library and campus partners to deliver programs and services in support of research and scholarship, including the Academic Commons institutional repository, journal publishing, faculty-driven projects, research data and research services. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
