This talk will give an overview of the state of EU’s Chat Control, what it is, and what it is not. We cover the short history and the current topics which are being debated and give you a good understanding of them. What is client-side scanning, what would it require from the system? Does it actually work, what does the data say? What about the future? And what does it mean for regular people? 

After we understand the subject, we explain how to best put your newfound knowledge to use. Both to educate your friends and to how you can influence the politicians and decision makers to ensure your voice is heard. From grass root to top.

This is a somewhat-interactive presentation where the audience will participate with their phones.

Gabriel Nyman is a founder, security executive, and community volunteer. He has spent the last decade building and leading security programs, from small startups to large global organisations.

With a background in privacy and compliance, he has seen the ins and outs of EU regulation firsthand—from the GDPR rollout to the misconceptions and unintended consequences that followed.

Gabriel believes security should be simpler. He founded a company to work toward that goal when he gets time away from his day job as a CISO.

Saara Pesonen

Saara Pesonen transitioned from mathematics into cybersecurity, where she’s spent the last 4 years specializing in vulnerability data science. At NCSC-FI (Traficom), she works with Finland’s attack surface mapping, identifying national infrastructure risks, essentially finding the digital doors before the wrong people do.

Curiosity drives her work. She asks questions, of the data and of the people around her. She believes cyber security without data-driven insights is just guessing, and that the questions you ask determine whether the data tells you anything useful.

Taneli “Dist” Kaivola

Taneli “Dist” Kaivola is a hacker, software developer and information security professional with more than 20 years of experience in programming and a decade in security consulting. He currently works at the Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Traficom, building tools for Finland’s National Cyber Security Centre.

Taneli has been part of the Finnish hacker community for decades and is the founder of KyberVPK, a volunteer collective of security professionals established to help organizations facing cyber incidents. His interests range from incident response and security research to low-level programming, cloud infrastructure, electronics and the hacker culture that brought him into the field in the first place.

He believes curiosity, sharing knowledge and asking questions are at the heart of both hacking and learning.
