Using rtl_433 in Home Assistant

Why?

I’ve had Home Assistant running for a while and wanted to track my water and power usage. While there aren’t any HA integrations for my utility providers or the meters, they both output their data on the 915 MHz ISM band. This makes it easy to use an SDR dongle and rtl_433 to receive the data, publish it to MQTT, and configure sensors in HA.

For the last three years, I rowed each day of December (2020, 2021, 2022) by starting with a base number of meters on the first of the month and adding that amount each successive day. The base was 325 in 2020, 375 in 2021, and 400 in 2022.

As I noted last year, I wanted to try something different and go for speed so I chose 100 as the base.

How it Went

Like years past I wasn’t in rowing shape but in OK runing shape. For the first couple weeks I did a HIIT or short row warmup prior to each workout and after that just the warmup. I got sidelined by fever two weeks in and had some other scheduling challenges so some days I doubled up and ended up going into January before wrapping up.

As I noted last year, I wanted to do 400 as a base this year so I could rank a few workouts–the 2K, 6K, and 10K–so that’s where I started. Due to some planned travel in December I also moved DecembErg to NovembErg with my last day falling on December 1.

Last year, I rowed each day of December by starting with a base of 325 meters on the first of the month and adding that amount each successive day, for a total of 161,200 meters.

This year, I wanted to up the challenge a bit so I started with 375 meters on the first for a total of 186,000 meters.

How it Went

Compared to last year, I didn’t really have a plan. I hadn’t been rowing much so I decided to just jump in and see how it went.

Inspired by Des Linden’s #RunDestober, I set out to do a similar challenge on the Concept2 erg. Hence, DecembErg.

I chose 325m each day as the addition amount which happened to come out to 161,200m or just over 100 miles. Given I just started back rowing a couple months ago this seemed doable and also a challenge since after the 15th I’d be doing more than a 5K each day and a 10K for the final day.

The other day at work I had a prospect asking about a reverse proxy they could set up for a POC. One of the use cases was to protect a legacy application that couldn’t be updated.

To make it easy for them I set up a Dockerfile and config for use with OpenResty, connection to Auth0 with OIDC. The following is based on the guidance in this post as well as the lua-resty-openidc docs.
