The elder leviathan adults no longer hunt dragons for fun but seek out whales and other large creatures to sustain their hunger instead. However, if a dragon happens to bother them, they will defend themselves and ultimately try to eat it. The elder leviathans are not very territorial and are content with sharing their side of the sea with others as long as the food is plentiful. While they usually explore the sea floor, they will come up if something catches their attention. They like watching passing boats closely, lurking near the surface, keeping sailors on their toes, though they never attack. When elder leviathans bond with a magi, they spend more time at the surface, patiently waiting for their human friends. If one dares to swim near them, the elder leviathan will act as a lifebuoy. This makes for a pretty terrible and funny picture. Having a massive creature swim extremely slowly underneath a tiny human just so said human doesn’t drown is not something someone would expect from a ferocious elder leviathan.
Though it has never been confirmed, scholars speculate the elder leviathans have lived in the deepest parts of the sea since the world came into existence. What drove them closer to the surface is unknown, but those who witnessed them first described them as enormous beasts with jaws wide enough to swallow an entire boat in one bite. Afraid of their wrath, people believed the elder leviathans would never cause anything else than woe and destruction, thus making many people see them as the pariah of all leviathans. However, opinions have changed over the years as more and more proof has surfaced that the elder leviathans do not attack without being provoked. They can be gentle if given the opportunity, and members of the Society of the Trident have volunteered to try and possibly tame elder leviathans. Since their massive bodies do not work to their advantage, progress on taming them is slow. These creatures are curious about those who dare approach them, and those few who manage to befriend elder leviathans gain not only the loyalty of a powerful creature but also a special kind of friendship that would last forever.
