Dr. Michael Coleman Miller, University of Maryland
Black holes break the rules. They warp space, stretch time, and swallow light itself, yet for most of history they were nothing more than a wild idea scribbled into the margins of Einstein's equations. How do we know they're real? And what do they actually tell us about the universe we live in?
In this talk, Dr. Michael Coleman Miller takes us on a journey from Newton's gravity to Einstein's radical rethink of space and time, and from there into the truly bizarre territory where black holes live. Get ready to have your brain gently broken (in a fun way).
Topics include:
Gravity as we've always understood it
Gravity as Einstein reimagined it, and why that changed everything
What physics predicts a black hole should actually look like
The mounting evidence that these cosmic monsters are real
This isn't a textbook lecture. It's a chance to sit with a drink in hand and understand, really understand, one of the strangest and most mind-bending ideas in all of science.
About the Speaker
Dr. Michael Coleman Miller is a Professor of Astronomy at the University of Maryland and a theoretical astrophysicist whose research focuses on black holes, neutron stars, and the extremes of gravity. He earned his B.S. in Mathematics and Physics, summa cum laude, from Hillsdale College, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Physics from the California Institute of Technology. Over his career he has published more than 180 papers and racked up over 17,000 citations for his work on compact objects and gravitational physics. He is co-author of the textbook Gravitational Waves in Physics and Astrophysics, and his contributions to the field have earned him honors including a Radboud Excellence Professorship and the Rossi Prize from the American Astronomical Society. He was also recently named a 2025 Fellow of the American Physical Society for his contributions to understanding neutron stars and black holes.

Author Talk & Letter Writing Party w/ Sonia Feldman ("Girl's Girl")

We are so thrilled to host Sonia Feldman, author of the acclaimed debut novel Girl's Girl that has been flying off our new releases display here at Kramers. The event will feature a ~1 hour author talk including audience Q&A followed by a Girl's Girl custom letter writing party to our best friends—all in spirit of the novel's exploration of the unparalleled magic within these friendships in our lives.
Sonia Feldman is a writer from Cleveland, Ohio. Her debut novel, Girl's Girl, is a national bestseller, New York Times Editors' Choice book and Belletrist Book Club pick. She is a winner of the PEN America PEN/Dau Prize for Emerging Writers, and her poetry has been published in literary journals like The Missouri Review, The Southern Review and Beloit Poetry Journal. She runs Sonia's Poem of the Week, a popular email newsletter. You can find her on Instagram.
Sonia will be joined in conversation with Literary Community Manager Emily Blumberg, who fell in love with this book instantly (and may or may not be writing this description).
