This is a job comparison — application builder versus conversational builder — not a claim that one plugin is “better at WordPress.”
Formidable Forms and Quill Forms both live in wp-admin and both can calculate a number. That is where the resemblance ends. Formidable is a form application platform: calculated fields, Views that turn entries into directories and tables, repeaters, the kind of build where a form is the back office of a site. Quill Forms is a conversational form builder: welcome screen, one question at a time, themes, Typeform-shaped public UX, unlimited responses on the free plugin. If you needed a searchable member directory of submitted data, Formidable is in its element. If you needed a homepage quiz that feels like a landing page, Quill Forms is in its element. Buying Formidable because someone said “calculator” and then wondering why it does not feel like Typeform is the usual accident. Buying Quill Forms because someone said “WordPress forms” and then wondering where the View is, is the other accident.
We compared product intent in 2026. Formidable’s reputation in the WordPress ecosystem is Views and calculators. Quill Forms’ reputation is conversational UI. Those are both “forms,” the way a forklift and a bicycle are both “transport.” We did not run a fake conversion study. We did not invent Formidable’s current price table. Gravity Forms remains the developer-feed standard; WPForms conversational is paid; Fluent’s conversational mode exists on free and is still a different renderer. Typeform remains the hosted conversational reference: Free ~10 responses/month, Basic ~$25/month annual for 100, Plus ~$50 for 1,000, Business ~$83 for 10,000, form typically closed at the cap. Neither Formidable nor Quill Forms sells that meter on WordPress.
Formidable Forms
Formidable is what you reach for when the form is not the end of the story. An entry becomes a listing. A calculator becomes a quote the visitor can see before they submit. A repeater becomes a family of related rows. Developers who have built “little apps” on Formidable stay because ripping Views out is a rewrite, not a theme tweak. That lock-in is earned. It is also why Formidable is the wrong first install for a five-question brand quiz.
Lite is a real WordPress.org plugin, not vapor. It is also not the Formidable people write case studies about. Calculated fields, Views, and the interesting add-ons sit on paid licenses in the usual WordPress pattern. Confirm the current split. Do not plan a directory on Lite because a YouTube video showed a View.
What Formidable does well
Data as a front-end. Views are the headline: search a directory of submissions, show a graph, build a dashboard-ish page without leaving WordPress. Calculators are the other headline: cost estimators, BMI-style math, quote builders that need formulas, not just a score at the end of a quiz. If your stakeholder said “we need the submissions to become the site,” listen. That is Formidable (or a custom app), not a conversational renderer.
Application energy: repeaters, lookup fields, the sense that a form can be an internal tool the public also touches. Agencies that sell “calculators and directories” already have Formidable playbooks. Switching them to Quill Forms for that job would be malpractice.
Where Formidable is a poor fit
The brief is Typeform. Full-screen one-question pacing, welcome as a first-class block, statement screens, drop-off by question as a conversational product. Formidable can be styled. Styling a grid into a conversation is not the same as a renderer that starts there. Preview on mobile before you promise a CMO a Typeform clone.
You wanted a free unlimited conversational builder with no badge. That is our free plugin’s story, not Formidable Lite’s. You wanted GitHub browsing of a conversational-first codebase. Different repo.
You only needed a contact form. Formidable is a lot of plugin for a mail tag. Contact Form 7 is enough. We are also a lot of conversation for a mail tag.
Best for: calculators that are real formulas, Views/directories of entries, WordPress “mini apps,” teams already standardized on Formidable.
Skip if: you wanted conversational-native marketing UX; you needed a Typeform alternative more than a View; you were not going to buy the license that includes the thing you demoed.
Quill Forms
Quill Forms is conversational as the default canvas. Free plugin: unlimited forms and responses, no required branding, themes, custom CSS, email notifications, dashboard entries. The calculator on Pro is a conversational scoring and outcome tool: quizzes, quotes, recommendation paths, running totals as the person answers. It is not Formidable Views. It will not list last month’s submissions as a sortable directory on the front end. If that sentence disappoints you, you wanted Formidable. If that sentence relieves you, you wanted a quiz engine, not an application platform.
What Pro adds
$99 / $199 / $399 per year (1 site / 5 sites / unlimited). Jump logic, calculator, file, phone, opinion, rating, calendar, signature, partials, drop-off analytics, hidden/UTM, Stripe Checkout and Elements, CRMs, reCAPTCHA, form locker. Jump logic plus calculator is the usual upgrade for “if they score high, show plan B.” Payments start when commerce is real. Studio at quillforms.app is hosted if you do not want WordPress — then you left the Formidable comparison entirely, because Formidable is a plugin.
Where Quill Forms is a poor fit
You need Views. We will not ship a fake View. You need a repeater-heavy application. Gravity or Formidable. You need the form to be an admin for a directory. Formidable. You do not want to host WordPress. Typeform or Studio, not this pairwise.
Skip if: the deliverable is a View; the calculator is a spreadsheet with twenty named fields on one screen; Formidable is already the standard and the complaint was not the public UX.
People say “calculator form” and mean three different objects.
One: a visible formula. Mortgage-ish math, material estimators, price from quantity and options, the number updates as fields change, maybe before submit. Formidable is famous for this class. The UI is usually still a form: many fields, a total, submit. That is correct when the user is comparing options like a spreadsheet.
Two: a score at the end of a conversation. Quiz results, recommendation buckets, “your estimate is.” The math can be simple. The pacing is the product. Quill Forms Pro is this class. Showing twenty inputs at once would defeat the brief.
Three: a WooCommerce product configurator. Often neither plugin is the whole answer. Use the shop. Use a form for non-SKU quotes.
If you install the wrong calculator, you will spend a month fighting CSS. We have watched people restyle Formidable into a fake Typeform and people restyle Quill Forms into a fake spreadsheet. Both look worse than buying the plugin that already thought that way.
We will not quote a conversion percentage for conversational calculators. Shorter perceived length can help; greedy questions still lose people. Cut fields in both builders.
Views versus a thank-you screen
A View is a reason to choose Formidable and not us. Job board listings from submissions. Staff directories. Testimonial grids from a form. Charts of public data. That is an application. A thank-you screen is a reason to choose a conversational tool: next step, calendar, payment, “share your result.” Different nouns.
Could you build a directory with another plugin or custom code after Quill Forms stores entries? Yes, if you are a developer who wanted that pain. You should not. Could you make Formidable’s thank-you pretty? Yes. You still do not have a conversation-first renderer.
Teams sometimes need both jobs on one site: a public estimator conversation and a logged-in directory of past estimates. That is two plugins or a custom app. Installing both Formidable and Quill Forms is allowed. Two entries UIs is the cost. A CRM or a real database is how you stop arguing about which table is true.
Conversation versus a field grid
Formidable’s public form is a form. Multi-page helps. Conditional logic (on paid, in their model — confirm Lite) hides fields. It is still closer to Gravity than to Typeform. That is a compliment if you are building an application. It is a mismatch if the CMO asked for Typeform.
Quill Forms’ public form is a conversation. Group block when name and email should share a step. Statement block when you need copy. Pro jump logic when the path forks. Drop-off analytics when you care which prompt died. Themes and CSS when the site already has a design system.
Fluent Forms conversational mode is the other WordPress “toggle” in this market: available on free, not the same renderer. WPForms conversational is paid. Gravity conversational is Elite (~$259 historically). Formidable is more Views/calculators than any of those Typeform-like modes. Put Formidable in the application column, not the conversational column, unless their current product page has changed the identity of the plugin. We have not seen it become Typeform.
Payments, spam, embed, lock-in
Payments: both ecosystems can take money on paid plans. Quill Forms is explicit about Stripe Checkout and Elements on Pro. Formidable’s processors and tier gates are theirs — check. WooCommerce remains the cart.
Spam: WordPress is WordPress. Quill Forms honeypot 5.7.1, reCAPTCHA on Pro. Formidable has its own anti-spam story in current releases. Public calculators attract junk and joke numbers. Validate.
Embed: both are native plugins. Blocks and shortcodes. Page builders get shortcodes/iframes. No SaaS iframe tax unless you chose Studio or Typeform.
Lock-in: Formidable Views are a beautiful trap. Quill Forms lock-in is smaller and more copy-shaped. GPL cores on both sides of the WordPress.org listing do not mean your View templates or your conversational themes port cleanly. Rebuild, as always.

Formidable Forms — best for: Views, formula calculators, directories, WordPress mini-apps, teams with Formidable playbooks. Skip if: you wanted Typeform-native pacing; you needed a free conversational unlimited plugin as the whole product; you were not buying the paid tier that includes Views.
Quill Forms — best for: conversational quizzes, surveys, intake, quote conversations, unlimited responses, Pro calculator as scoring/outcomes. Skip if: the deliverable is a View; you needed repeaters-as-app; Formidable already runs the site and UX was not the complaint.
If the RFP says “calculator + Typeform + directory,” that is two products or a custom build. Anyone who promises one plugin for that sentence is selling a demo, not a year of maintenance.

Which is the Typeform alternative?
Quill Forms, in intent. Formidable is the Views/calculator alternative to “we built a small app in a form plugin.” Typeform itself is hosted with 2026 response caps (10 / 100 / 1,000 / 10,000, form can close). Neither WordPress plugin meters responses that way.
Does Formidable Lite include the calculator I saw in a demo?
