In general, how quickly should I see changes on one device appear on my others?

I have Noteplan on my Mac, iPhone, and iPad, all with CloudKit enabled. This morning, on my Mac, I made several changes within a note and then moved on to something else. Those changes are still not showing up on either of my iDevices, a few hours later.

Should they be, and how should it work if I change something on one of the iDevices? How quickly should I see that show up on the other devices?

I came across an instance where I'm in the middle of taking notes and it was very convenient for me to open quick notes to create an unrelated task, but the feature didn't allow this. This would be a nice way to quickly add a task without having to leave the page in taking notes on. Maybe this was already discussed? I didn't see anything recently.
