Fundamental Sciences

Wayne State has a long tradition of excellence in fundamental sciences research. From developing an understanding of nanomaterials to advance technologies such as information storage, sensors energy conversion and more, to studying fundamental particles in detail to understand the universe at a fundamental level, our faculty are engaged in research that will improve scientific theories and fuel future innovations.

Lumigen Instrument Center

The Lumigen Instrument Center (LIC), located in the basement of the Chemistry Building, is a shared-use facility that provides high-quality research and teaching support to Wayne State University researchers and the broader Detroit and Michigan scientific communities. The Lumigen Instrumentation Core consists of five core facilities: X-ray Crystallography, Electron Microscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Mass Spectrometry, and Optical Spectroscopy and Calorimetry. Together, these facilities provide advanced analytical capabilities that support interdisciplinary research and education across a wide range of scientific disciplines.
