San Francisco Freeway & Road Rehabilitation

Upcoming Full Weekend Closures

Update: Weekend Closures on Southbound U.S. 101 Bayshore Freeway (Hospital Curve) October 16-19

All southbound lanes of the U.S. 101 Bayshore Freeway (Hospital Curve) will be closed from Friday October 16, 11 pm. to Monday October 19, 6 a.m. to complete the repaving of all southbound lanes between Cesar Chavez and 17th St. Motorists are advised to avoid area and use the SB I-280 freeway or use an alternate route.

This third closure to repave the U.S. 101 Bayshore Freeway is part of the broader U.S. 101 Bayshore Freeway (Hospital Curve) rehabilitation project which began in Fall of 2025. This weekend's work begins the first of two weekend closures on the freeway to repave the southbound lanes of the freeway. Caltrans returns in November to complete the southbound lanes repaving.

Upcoming Weekend Closure Details:

October 16-19 (Third Closure)

  • The third full closure weekend for Hospital Curve will take place Friday, October 16 at 11 p.m. through Monday, October 19 at 6 a.m.
  • All southbound U.S. 101 lanes closed. One northbound lane will be closed and remaining lanes open.

November 6-9 (Fourth Closure)

  • All southbound U.S. 101 lanes closed. One northbound lane will be closed and remaining lanes open.

Note: the November 6-9 closure is a replacement of the October 2-5 closure originally scheduled.

Central/Bayshore Freeway Ramp Closure

U.S. 101 SB Central Freeway to U.S. SB 101 Freeway Connector Ramp

  • Weekend Closure: Friday, October 2, 11 p.m. to Monday, October 5, 6 a.m.

WB I-80 Full Weekend Closure

All lanes of westbound I 80 between 5th St. and 15th St. will be closed from October 23 to October 26 for joint construction work. During this closure, traffic will be diverted off the Fremont Street exit as well as the 5th Street exit, which will serve as the final exit before the closure limits. Once work is completed, Caltrans will reopen all lanes and continue scheduled improvements in the corridor.

Traffic Advisories

Exciting changes are underway on San Francisco’s roads and freeways, specifically on the I-280, the U.S. 101 Hospital Curve, the Central Freeway, and SR-1 (19th Avenue). We call them the Fab 4! Each project is receiving major repaving and rehabilitation, helping create safer, smoother driving experiences for everyone who drives to, from, and in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. Work is progressing on the U.S. 101 Hospital Curve of the Bayshore freeway, and on the U.S. 101 Central freeway. The I-280 Farallones pedestrian overcrossing and rehabilitation work begins in Summer 2026. And the 19th Avenue rehabilitation is near completion!

These rehabilitation projects will provide extensive repairs and upgrades to restore the structural integrity and enhance the safety of San Francisco’s most used freeways by motorists, where approximately 44,900 people travel daily.

San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Joint Rehabilitation Project*

Project Schedule — through 2027

*Motorists should expect lane closures occurring overnight on the EB I-80 San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge throughout the project. Closures will usually start with closing one lane at 10:00 pm., two lanes at 11:00 p.m., and three lanes at midnight. With a few exceptions when work is delayed or postponed for major local event traffic, lane closures will be in effect from Sunday to Thursday nights.

Caltrans has launched a major effort to revitalize San Francisco’s most used roads and freeways. We refer to them as the Fab-4 Rehab projects which will create safer and smoother driving experiences in and around San Francisco. Two of these projects are taking place along the Bayshore and Central freeways US-101 and I-80. A third project will be the repaving of the entire 19th Avenue (SR-1) between the Golden Gate Park and San Francisco State University. And the fourth project is the rebuilding of an outdated pedestrian overcrossing on the I-280 near Cayuga Park.

Upcoming Lane and Ramp Closures

Central/Bayshore Freeway Overnight Lane Closures

To support ongoing construction and safety improvements, overnight lane closures will continue through October 2026 on the Central/Bayshore Freeway. Work is scheduled nightly from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Lanes 1 and 2 between US 101 and the 4th Street/Bryant off ramp will be closed, leaving one lane open for traffic. Drivers should expect reduced speeds, possible delays, and shifting traffic patterns through the work zone.

Central/Bayshore Freeway Ramp Closure
