This Jeffrey pine cone looks like a welcoming beginning to the fall season, but it had a bit of a surprise for us inside. We CT scanned it and found coneworms, the larvae of a moth in the Dioryctria genus that shelter inside and eat the seeds. The open cone had 3 of them. A

These Jeffrey pine cones had a bit of a surprise waiting inside. Both were infested with coneworms, the larvae of moths in the genus Dioryctria that lay their eggs inside the cone. When the eggs hatch, the larvae eat the pine seeds from the inside out. One cone had three worms.
