Most of what I enjoy is the middle part — after the idea is exciting and before it works. Reading someone else's code until it makes sense. Finding the assumption that was wrong three files ago. Deleting more than I add.

I care about the parts users never name: how fast it responds, whether it fails honestly, whether the next person can change it without fear. Craft on the surface is only convincing when the thing underneath is sound.
