XLibre support discontinued
With the 2026.08 ISO release, Artix switched back to Xorg. The switch had been decided soon after the 2026.04 release, due to the unusually high amount of XLibre-related bug reports on our forum and started with our weekly ISO images. This resulted in backlash from XLibre and a veteran Artix developer, Artist, was targeted and harassed, which led to his resignation.
Artist is the developer who made XLibre possible on Artix and we regret to inform our users that XLibre will no longer be packaged. Existing XLibre users will have it replaced by the corresponding Xorg packages soon. Should any choose to remain on XLibre, its 3rd-party repositories must be placed above [world] in /etc/pacman.conf, in full knowledge it is unsupported.
Official ISO release 2026-08
Second official release for 2026. Related forum thread.
Main release notes:
- The default X server is again Xorg; XLibre is still packaged and available for installation.
- User services have been fully implemented for OpenRC and dinit. They can also be enabled for runit and s6 via userspawn, however, for the time being, this task is left on the end user.
- Full Wayland support only in Plasma. Our other DEs are in various stages of Wayland support, but not yet ready for daily use.
New s6 service manager
We will be moving to upstream's new s6-frontend as the primary way to manage the s6 implementation on Artix.
Previously, in-house scripts and wrappers were used, but s6-frontend allows us to be more init agnostic and match upstream more closely. For users, the primary change is that command line interface for managing services changes slightly. Instead of enabling services by touching empty files to a directory, you will now use s6 set enable foo. For more details please check the s6 wiki page and upstream documentation.
Currently, the new s6 packages are in the gremlins repos and will eventually make their way to stable later this week. Please report any issues you may encounter at the forum announcement thread.
Artix Linux User Repository of Init Scripts
After some reasonable time in development, we offer a repository for user-submitted init scripts, the AURIS.
Submitted scripts will automatically get packaged when approved by a moderator and moved into the [auris] repository. Please, read the instructions at the project's own page for details.
More information and feedback at the announcing forum topic.
