I'm breaking my Dreamwidth <strike>laziness </strike>silence today to recall a nearly exactly <strike>three</strike>four (!)-year-old post on Marriage that I wrote when the Iowa Supreme court decided unanimously that a law banning same-sex marriage was unconstitutional.

Because that same issue is before the U.S. Supreme Court this week, and the same damn issue keeps coming up and be cited like it is a goddamn fact, (and it continues to piss me off) I am linking again to my old post.

TL;DR Summary: It is NOT true that marriage has always (naturally and historically) between one man and one woman. So STOP using that as a basis for your argument. It wasn't even true in the Bible. You should ask anthropologists about it.

Read it and if you hear people using this argument, take a moment to tell them they are full of shit.

Bonus, the American Anthropological Association statement on Marriage and the Family:
"The results of more than a century of anthropological research on households, kinship relationships, and families, across cultures and through time, provide no support whatsoever for the view that either civilization or viable social orders depend upon marriage as an exclusively heterosexual institution. Rather, anthropological research supports the conclusion that a vast array of family types, including families built upon same-sex partnerships, can contribute to stable and humane societies.
The Executive Board of the American Anthropological Association strongly opposes a constitutional amendment limiting marriage to heterosexual couples."

comments

Hello friends! I've been such an absent woman in the past year. I've been working hard, traveling for work and play, and getting to know my new city and its inhabitants. Things are good--really good, in fact! Not dead! Just busy.

I hope you are all well.

Fannishly, I've been consuming and lurking in many waters--mostly Sherlock (BBC), X-Men: First Class, Lewis, ST:Reboot, the whole Avengers 'verse, and now Teen Wolf. It's hard to believe I used to be so fannishly monogamous!

Have also been working on making new friends--shockingly some of them are even fannish!! It's such a delight to live in a city with other fen.
After several crazy months of travel for work, friends, and family, I finally had the chance to read (a tiny fraction of) my LJ/DW backlog. And, friends, this is it! I can't take the duplication between my two journals any more!

Drives! Me! Nuts!

So, I'm reorganizing and checking for who is posting on DW and/or LJ.
I'm far past due on dropping by the fannish community to say hey.

Things are going well in the new city at the new job. I am amazed at how many people I know pass through new city--it's wonderful! I am also amazed at the number of fangirls in new city. I've been on <strike>two</strike> <strike>three</strike> four fannish outings and am pleased to say that without exception, every fangirl I've met has been super smart! And fun! So, emerging from my fannish cave is going well.

I saw Benedict Cumberbatch in Frankenstein today--the play, itself was far more focused on the creature's perspective than I expected. It was interested and I enjoyed it, for the most part. As a word of warning, Danny Boyle's play has a fairly shocking portrayal of rape. In any case, Benedict was lovely and (again!) well dressed. :D

I'm trying to scrape up other news, but apart from SV's impending finale (another fannish event I'll be checking in at), I can't think of much. To be honest, work is eating most of my attention and energy. It's good, but it's an adjustment to get up to ramp up to new jobs level of activity.

comments

I'm checking in since it's been so long. I'm still here! I've just been busy and haven't had much time to LJ of late. I only have a couple hours of free time in the evenings and somehow posting doesn't seem to make the cut very often.

In other news, I will be going back to India for a few weeks in May to visit my cousin who is doing some non-profit work there. I am SUPER excited to go see her. I am also excited because I will be going with my aunt and uncle and their son, which will be the first time I've been in India with any family or non-Indophiles. SO excited to introduce them to the country I love!

Lastly, am thinking about--maybe--attending my first fan convention. A big step for this shy fangirl.

Hope everyone is doing well. I am so woefully behind on even reading LJ, I'm feeling bad that I don't know what's going on with you all.

comments

As my dear, departed Grandmother once said, "Happy Beladed Valenline's Day!" (on a homemade valentine my freshman year of college). I've been unable to say it any other way since! Hee!

I am such a lucky girl to have friends thinking of me on V-day, even when I've been so absent on LJ. Thank you so much, my dear roxymissrose and patrese1 for the profile gifts. That was so thoughtful of you. It really warmed my heart.

I've not had much time for LJ, but have recently been playing with Photoshop. I found a tutorial on how to make line drawings and have been spending my free time trying to learn how to trace over images. Here's a sample of how it looks.

( Bigger! )

I'm so excited to try out this new technique on new art once I get better at it! Unfortunately, some parts are easier than others. The faces turned out really well (which surprised the crap out of me!)! But hands are giving me a hard time. Hopefully I'll get a better sense of it as I keep practicing.

I'm also busy planning another trip back to India this summer. I will be visiting my cousin and traveling with my Aunt and Uncle--my first time there with family! I'm very excited to share this with them. Sadly, I had to get some updates to my inoculations today. Waaah! My arms hurt. *sulks*

And that's pretty much what I'm up to. Now I'm going to bed early to sulk about my sore arms some more.

ETA: Here is the tutorial I was inspired by.

comments

Dog Advice Needed: What to do when my dog loses her crate training?

Hey there fellow dog owners and other experts--I need your help!

I recently got back from being out of town for the holidays and discovered that somehow my dog has lost her crate training!

I took her (and her crate) with me. She was crated intermittently and my cousin heard her whining and whimpering once, which was the first clue that something had changed for her. Then, tonight my neighbor called and told me that she has been yipping and whining for a couple of hours each time I've left the house since we got back into town. She has also been drooling along the door of the crate, but not peeing or pooing in the crate.

If anyone has any ideas for what might be going on or what the best way to deal with this, I would really appreciate it. Have you ever seen this before or heard of it? Any idea what might trigger it?

These are my ideas and thoughts so far:

I can't take any more time off of work, but I could maybe run home over lunch to let her out. On the other hand, I'm worried that she doesn't really have a sense of time and that coming home over lunch would just create two stressful crating situations a day.

The only other thought I've had is that I could maybe (maybe) ask some friends to dog-sit for part of the day. Maybe. But not for very long.

Help?

comments

*taps microphone*

Hello... is this thing on? It's been a while since I've done any posting. I hope you guys are still out there!

So, I have been thinking about my fannish evolution recently... partly because I am a fan of several shows these days, but not in the intensity of the Smallville love of old. It made me wonder... it seems like I've heard other SV emeritus friends say similar things. while I've known monofannish fen and polyfannish fen, I don't really know if there is a larger pattern in fannish evolution.

What do you think? Is it common to go crazy about you first fandom? After the inevitable falling out, do you tend toward multiple fandom love? What has been your fannish story?

---
In other news, about other social media: You can message me or email me about any of the below if you don't want your information displayed in comments.

+ I am on Twitter, though I'm am not very fannish.
Hello everybody!
I don't think I've check in for most of the Fall. Sorry about that!

I'm doing good--I just don't have much time left after I take the dog out for exercise and make dinner in the evenings. I'm so proud of her! I also had my crazy family (early-) Christmas and went to a couple weddings. So... I haven't been totally housebound. :)

I weakened at Target last week and bought a costume for my dog. She pretty much only wants to eat it, but I love making her wear it.
PSA: Be Savvy Donors! Beware of "Stop AIDS Now" and the Center for AIDS Prevention

I don't have an icon angry enough for this story. It makes me see red that someone would capitalize on the AIDS issue for more than a decade to raise shady money.

Aggressive Fundraising By Shady AIDS Charity has little oversight
ProPublica has published a second expose on "The Center for AIDS Prevention" and reports on a long list of suspicious activities on the part of the Center. The fact that the charity is advertising on the websites of major newspapers is no doubt pulling in serious cash from unsuspecting donors. Read the article and (if you feel it is justified) spread the word that anyone inclined to donate should do some serious research before giving.

Now I am going back into my hole for another week. Hope to be around more after July 4th! ♥

ETA: FYI this weekend is the 40th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. If you are so inclined, you might find commemorative festivities in your area. And here is an extremely random photo montage from Slate.com

comments

Fucking. Boring.

So. Fucking. Preachy.

It drives me nuts.

While watching this vid that involved nearly the same plot cliche it occurred to me that one of the (several) reasons that I enjoy slash (apart from the shallowness of its sizzling hotness) is that it gives me the freedom to explore relationship tensions in a way that puts aside the frustrating gender politics. It IS part of any relationship that both partners have to make sacrifices to make it work. And sometimes that fact disappears behind the long history of social expectation of male and female behavior.

And that's my deep thought for the week. Maybe even the month.

comments

Because they have such a generous time table for minimal participation (ONE piece in the next year!), I totally got sucked into playing kink_bingo!
