Screen reader support across all Blockly labs on CodeAI

Screen reader support is now live across all Blockly labs on CodeAI. Students who are blind or have low vision can work in the same labs as everyone else, using screen readers and refreshable braille displays — no separate track. Shaped by blind and low-vision students, educators, and accessibility specialists.

Adaptive games and open tools for students with physical disabilities

Students learn to code by designing adaptive games in MakeCode Arcade. Three tools are already free to use: open-source hardware for switch users, communication boards for students who don't speak, and a Slack community for educators. The full curriculum arrives later this year.

Create an accessible programming app based on icon blocks (horizontal programming)

Sistema THEAD is developing a new web application based on Blockly to make it accessible for students with disabilities. This app will be customizable, integrate with Scratch Tactile physical blocks, and offer features for students with various needs. It aims to promote inclusion and provide an accessible learning environment for all students.

An American Sign Language glossary for coding terms

Deafness
Coding vocabulary has no agreed signs, which leaves Deaf and hard-of-hearing students guessing. The new Blockly ASL Glossary is a visual dictionary of computer science terms in American Sign Language — for use in class, at home, and inside learning platforms.

Coding with eye gaze

Some students navigate a computer entirely by where they look. This project makes Blockly work with eye-gaze input, so students who can't use a keyboard or a mouse can still build and run their own programs.

Make robotics programming more accessible with a new controller

FIRST Robotics is developing a new robot controller with Blockly-based programming. This will make robot programming more accessible and intuitive, especially for students with no coding experience. It could benefit over 250,000 students by 2027.

Improve accessibility of block-based interfaces through enhanced screen reader support

The Neil Squire Society is working to improve the accessibility of Blockly for students with disabilities. They are enhancing screen reader support, integrating ARIA attributes, and addressing challenges for users with limited dexterity. This will enable more students to engage with coding education and develop STEM skills.

Empower autistic students to program collaboratively

The Collaborative Blockly project aims to help autistic students learn to program collaboratively by providing scaffolded support and tools for managing social interactions and cognitive load. This will enable them to work effectively in group settings and develop essential collaboration skills.

Improve the accessibility of the Scratch platform

The Scratch Foundation will enhance the accessibility of the Scratch platform by adding keyboard navigation throughout the Scratch editor and community site, improving screen reader compatibility, and prototyping experimental speech control for coding.

This project aims to improve accessibility in App Inventor, a block-based coding platform. It will contribute to the Blockly community by improving the core, creating plugins, and providing feedback.

Helping teachers make computer science accessible

Accessible tools only help if teachers know how to use them. Working alongside schools and partner organizations, this team trains educators to apply the POUR principles — perceivable, operable, understandable, robust — and to judge whether the hardware in their classroom works for every student.

Code navigation and audio cues for blind and low-vision students

Blind and low-vision students and teachers helped design this from the start. The team built keyboard navigation and audio cues that match how programmers actually picture code in their heads, then tested it in classrooms. The result is a published framework other coding tools can adopt.

Training developers to build accessible coding tools

Accessibility law changed sharply in 2024, but the people who build coding tools are almost never trained for it. This team built a curriculum that closes the gap — covering the rules that now apply, with hands-on training sessions and a 2026 hackathon.

Testing MakeCode with the students who use it

Experts, teachers, and students tested MakeCode's accessibility features while they were being built. That feedback shaped the screen reader support and keyboard navigation that reached micro:bit users in 2026.
