From Device to Cloud with Blues

Blues is the backbone of your smart connected products. We handle everything from data and security to connectivity and cloud delivery so that your team can stay focused on what really matters.

Sensors and actuators are embedded into your connected product:

  • Sensors gather raw data and telemetry needed for your app logic
  • Actuators remotely manage how equipment operates

Your host can be either your existing MCU or SBC, or one of Blues’ Feather-compatible options, and interacts with the Notecard:

  • Controls Notecard/Starnote through simple JSON APIs
  • Sets synchronization policies between Notecard and Notehub
  • Passes / receives JSON telemetry or binary payloads to / from Notecard (and/or Starnote) via I2C or UART
  • Leverages Notecard environment variables set for project, fleet, or device to remotely configure application state and behavior
  • Configures use of Notecard/Starnote fallback RATs

Notecarrier

Notecarriers are companion project boards that accelerate integrating Notecard / Starnote into your project:

  • Simplify sensor integration, MCU integration, and command and control integration
  • Some models include embedded antennas
  • Some models support secondary (auxilliary) SIMs for expanded Mobile Network Operator (MNO) support
  • Some models can be integrated directly into production designs

Notecards are plug-and-play wireless System-on-Modules that securely connect your product to Notehub and the cloud.

  • No AT commands – controlled via JSON APIs
  • Reliably sends / receives JSON or binary data to/from Notehub
  • Engineered for ultra low power utilization, with cellular Notecards typically drawing between ~8 and 15µA@5V when idle
  • STSAFE secure element with factory-installed ECC P-384, hardware crypto and true random number generator
  • Cellular models integrate SIM with dataplan, no subscription fees

Starnotes are plug-and-play accessories to Notecards that support either Skylo GEO or Iridium LEO satellite networks:

  • Communicates with Notecard over UART
  • Controlled as a Notecard accessory via Notecard JSON APIs
  • Reliably sends/receives JSON or binary data to/from Notehub
  • Engineered for ultra low power utilization, with Starnote for Skylo typically drawing less than ~4µA@5V when idle
  • Can be configured as primary or fallback network, depending on product/application needs

Radio networks securely transport JSON or binary payloads between Notecard / Starnote and Notehub:

  • Cellular: Off-internet using private APNs, using a Hardware Security Module (HSM) for TLS-based device-authentication
  • Skylo/Iridium: Private communication channels, packets encrypted by ChaCha20-Poly1305 authenticated encryption
  • LoRaWAN: Includes mutual authentication, AES-CMAC, replay attack prevention and end-to-end payload encryption
  • WiFi: Full TLS encryption, using HSM for device-authentication

Notehub

Notehub is an enterprise-grade cloud orchestration layer that routes data to/from the cloud and manages your connected products:

  • Securely, reliably and dynamically routes data to one or more cloud endpoints
  • Configures devices manually, in bulk, or through APIs
  • Manage reliable OTA firmware updates on a device, subfleet or fleet basis
  • Lets you inspect any connected device, subfleet or fleet

Data routing provides secure store-and-forward routing of Notecard-originated data to the cloud-endpoints of your choice:

  • Dynamic, controllable routing of data to/from one or more alternate endpoints
