The Book of Motion

The Book of Motion

Motion is power.

Most animation resources start by talking about code, or taste. This book starts at the start: Perception.

Whether you intend for it or not, every animation communicates something to the user. About your brand, about your interface. About what is happening, or what has just happened. So, better you intend it!

From there, we'll explore mechanics (timing, keyframes, springs), engineering (the render pipeline, performance, layout projection), and in practice (animating a button, a modal, a page). Each topic illustrated with animated diagrams and performance-graded examples.

The last time I sat down to write a book about motion, I ended up spending 12 years writing animation libraries instead. This time, it's finally happening.

The Book of Motion frequently asked questions
QuestionAnswer
Will this book be included in Motion+?No. The Book of Motion will be a standalone purchase, although every Motion+ member will receive a 10% voucher towards the book.
Does this book only cover Motion? This book isn't about Motion, the animation library, but the mechanics, engineering and practice of motion in UI design. We'll look under the hood of Motion to describe concepts, and use Motion (as well as CSS) to implement ideas - but the book is far more general to animation.
When will the full book be released? Each chapter is published when it is ready. I'm writing the book alongside maintaining Motion, but I aim to release chapters regularly.
Do you offer student discounts or PPP?I've tried to price early access affordably, so not for now.
