When I was little, we had a beanbag chair in the tv room. It was brown and furry, and it was the type that's filled with little styrofoam pellets. This probably explains why my mother eventually got rid of it. Those things end up everywhere.

I have succumbed to ~~peer pressure~~ the frequent mentions on my reading list, and I started playing Glitch last night. So far, it's fun, and I'm slowly figuring things out. (Some things. Where to find dirt piles so that I can finish that quest, not so much.)

Starbridge! Also, Yuletide!

This was supposed to be a post talking about which fandoms I think I might nominate for Yuletide. I was going to say that I intend to nominate A.C. Crispin's StarBridge series again even though I fully expect that, as with every other year I've nominated it, no one other than me will sign up to write it. Then I was going to say that out-of-print paperback series are sometimes a little too rare even for Yuletide. And then I went googling so that I could gripe about exactly how long those books have been out of print.

This is getting ridiculous

In theory, the point of having an internship is to take what you've learned in school and learn to apply it in the workplace. I would really like it if things happened in that order more often. It seems like more often than not, exactly the opposite happens. The most extreme example of this was last fall* when J had me spend the morning teaching myself JDBC and then my professor spent the afternoon introducing us to that very topic, but it's happened enough that it's notable when I'm actually learning something for the first time in class.

I was reading Criminal Minds fic tonight in which the author suggested that Rossi learned to cook in self defense, because Stouffer's just doesn't cut it when you've grown up on your Italian grandma's lasagna recipe. Very true. And it's put me in the mood for lasagna. Alas, I've never seen gluten-free lasagna noodles that are worth eating. Good gluten-free ziti, on the other hand, is easy to find. That's dinner for tomorrow decided upon.

Living in the future

Giving that I am, apparently, completely incapable of remembering things overnight (for example, that the Bears play tonight instead of yesterday), it's pretty cool to be standing in the middle of the grocery store and have my phone inform me that kickoff just happened, and to then be able to tell my tv to record the game.

PBS has a series called Great Performances, which is... pretty much what it sounds like. Sometimes it's theater, sometimes a concert, sometimes a documentary, but always a good performance of some sort. My DVR recorded an episode sometime last week which is documentary of sorts with Hugh Laurie touring the south - mostly Austin and New Orleans - and talking about (and playing) the blues.

For various reasons that aren't worth going into in a public post, I've been developing an unwilling interest in country and country-ish music over the past year or so. Up until now most of my exposure to the genre was from my little sister's country music phase. I like the Dixie Chicks, but overall it usually isn't to my taste, which is why I was surprised to like Sugarland. Or rather, I was surprised until I looked them up on Wikipedia. They may be country now, but apparently their roots are the Atlanta folk rock scene. Know who else came from that scene way back when? Indigo Girls. Suddenly things become clear.

There's a discussion post open in yuletide_admin for people to discuss what fandoms they're planning on nominating. I opened it to put in my two cents, and... I have no idea what I want! Ack! Usually I keep a running list throughout the year, but I've had so little time this year to get sucked into small fandoms, that... yeah. Ack. But also... YULETIDE IS SOON!

Bizarrely, today - when we're having distinctly autumn-feeling weather - there was more fruit in my CSA basket than ever before. Fruity fruit, that is, as opposed to the stream of tomatoes we got all summer. Today there were two local-ish peaches, four local apples (yellow eating apples, didn't catch the exact variety), a tomato, bell peppers in three colors, an onion, a zucchini, and an acorn squash. And a tiny jar of honey.

Best. Restaurant. Ever.

There's a new diner near campus that opened sometime this summer. I hadn't tried it until just now, but it's quarter past nine and I had lunch at 11. A cheap, fast dinner that I don't have to cook first sounded like a good idea. So far I give the diner full marks. It's cheap, it was indeed fast, the food is pretty good, and they're open 24/7: all good qualities in a restaurant that's practically on campus.

The time has come to pick semester projects for my web development class. We were given an example in class today to give us a sense of appropriate scope: last semester, one team wrote a Facebook app that can log into your Netflix, Goodreads, and Last.fm accounts and present you with a list of stuff you've read/watched/heard lately and give you the option to select ones to Like.
