Como ademais ando investigando a fondo sobre os feeds RSS –vou falar do tema na próxima WordCamp Galicia :)-, instalei o plugin wordpress-rss-chat para probar tamén a integración con rss.chat, unha nova ferramenta, aínda experimental, para crear miniredes sociais nas que cada entrada / resposta / comentario é un fío RSS.

Vou usar esta entrada para testear se todo está conectado como debera: ese post debería velo calquera que siga @blog no fediverso (nestes momentos, só eumesma), e tamén debería saír no fío de demo.rss.chat. E as respostas que se fagan por aló deberían verse como comentarios aquí… e viceversa.

Hei editar este post a posteriori para aprender tamén como funciona todo este lío cando se actualizan entradas xa publicadas, e para intentar explicalo todo un pouco mellor.

Así que que ninguén se estrañe se aquí empezan a lerse comentarios doutra Pi noutro universo, feeds repetidos, reposts, webmentios, etc.

It's a bit tricky to find yours, but if you visit https://github.com/ while logged in, view the HTML source, and search for 'priavte.atom'. You'll see activity for everybody you follow, including what they star (that's how I know what AboutRSS is interested in).

The reason I'm not so into AI agents is that there's enough mop-up duty with "if this then that"-style automation. It can't be any better when automation is being done by a lava lamp. Plus the amount of setup is tiring (if not exhausting, since I like that kind of thing).

@dave BTW it took me a while to get the websocket client I have been using (Mint.WebSocket, Elixir) connected to the firehose. Couldn’t find the source code, but your server only accepts a “Connection: Upgrade” header and replies with a 400 error when Mint sends “Connection: upgrade” (lowercase). I filed an issue in the Mint repository about it.

I'm looking into how to document privacy for an RSS-based, federated service, and I'd love to see how others have handled it.

Specifically: what happens to a post once it leaves your server — syndicated over RSS, cached, crossposted to another instance, or shown by third-party readers? I'm based in Europe, so I'm especially keen on examples that aren't written purely from a US angle. Not looking for legal advice — mostly how people have actually thought about it.

A couple of decisions I ended up making, as discussion starters (and because I'd genuinely like to hear if others went a different way):

Erasure vs. federation. Once a post has been crossposted to another server, my take is that actual removal over there is up to that server (caches, archives) — we request the takedown, but can't guarantee it. How do you word this without either over-promising or scaring people off?

Traces after deletion. When an account is deleted, its old public address returns a permanent "account withdrawn" (HTTP 410) — which still reveals that a handle once existed. I chose to spell that out rather than pretend deletion is total. Does anyone handle this differently?

This app is holding the place for a protocol I want to be widely supported. It's also documented and there's even a validator for it. I want it to be easy to hook up other apps to the network this defines. And all the source code is released under the MIT license.

It's not my place to say what micro.blog is -- but the other day I called it: "the swiss army knife of interop in the web of the 2020's." And in that it is unique and imho irreplaceable.

Now we also support WebSub because there are also a fair number of feed readers that only use WebSub.

We're using Andrew Shell's rsscloud.io as our WebSub hub, as we have for a long time with rssCloud.

Hi Robert, I had Claude tell me that you're the generous developer who wrote us that thoughtful report last night about the security issue.

FIrst, there are no plans for the /localnewuser function, we put it in because we watched some users struggle through installing the server because they had to set up the email server connection before they could log onto the site themselves. We could also see it as a way for a sysop to set up accounts for users. No plans to do anything more with it.

We tried out a bunch of ideas here to integrate news with what rss.chat does, the best one imho was a blogroll, like the one you see on scripting.com, in the left column. That's the way I'd go. But if posts from Bluesky show in the timeline then the discussions are going to be like discussions on Bluesky. And we already have Bluesky for that. :-)

What I really want is an RSS-to-Standard.site bridge, both ways. That will give an outlet to leaflet to the whole web, not just the ones who study AT Proto.

And again thanks for the report. It was basically perfect. ;-)

Bluesky post import utility

I've got an initial version of a utility program that gets Bluesky posts and posts them into rss.chat.

The thought behind it is that if there is an important news account that you want to see in the chat and have discussions about this is a simple bridge to bring that to the feed. (Like a breaking news account on Election Day or the Wario64 video game deals feed).

It is using the /localnewuser? endpoint which is very new (as of the last week). I'm not 💯 on using it, so I wanted to ask what the plans are for that endpoint before posting something that uses it on GitHub.

I built a small experiment on top of the rss.chat API: https://chatouk.sofab.ch — an independent public-posts app that bridges with the rss.chat network.

It works both ways. A reply written in Chatouk is crossposted through the API and threads correctly here. And replies posted here flow back in real time into Chatouk threads via the WebSocket firehose, shown with their origin.

Nothing but open standards: RSS out, the rss.chat API for crossposting, the firehose for listening. The bridge setup is multi-server — this instance and https://rsschat.sofab.ch are connected so far, adding another takes one command.

Drupal's Aggregator Module

Speaking of RSS, let me tell you the story of Drupal's Aggregator module. I actually don't know the full story of it, just my (extensive) experience with it.

I first encountered Drupal in 2004 when I met Boris Mann (yes, that Boris Mann) and over breakfast at a diner in Vancouver, he said to me "Richard, I want you to know as much about Drupal as you know about Movable Type." I fell in love right away, though this was the era when you had to import MySQL files to install a module. The Aggregator module came with the core of the software, so no database installation needed.

What's the Aggregator module? Well, it takes RSS feeds, pulls them on the schedule you define, and republishes them on your Drupal site. You can see it in action here: https://richard.eriksson.ca/blogosphere We (Boris, Roland and I) ran a site called Urban Vancouver, and every time we encountered a Vancouver-based blog, we aggregated (technically syndicated) it on the site. It got us into trouble every now and then, and we had arguments with copyright holders as to whether they were right about violation (they were) but also whether they benefited from being syndicated (they did). So we asked for forgiveness rather than permission and with experience comes maturity, so I don't know how I'd handle it content syndication (re-publication, not just feed aggregation for personal reading) via RSS would go over today.

But you know what was interesting about the aggregator module? You could categorize feeds. Correction, you can categorize feeds. The "Richard's Blogosphere" link above is a category of feeds that I just give a URL to. And get this: It comes with OPML: https://richard.eriksson.ca/blogosphere/opml so if I were to add a feed to it via the UI, it would get added there. If you were to subscribe to that OPML feed in a "Reading List"-compatible reader, the list of feeds would update as well.

Back in the 2000s (the decade), we had this idea of becoming content DJs, where we would aggregate (pull in) content via RSS, and tag each content item with a category, and it would link to the original URL. Content DJs could take that feed and further "remix" it.

That's an idea that's not dead, by the way. https://justagwailo.com/shared (which has a feed at https://justagwailo.com/shared/feed ), in its heyday, would pull in my "Likes" from around the web. Peter Rukavina (yes, that Peter Rukavina) does something extremely similar at https://ruk.ca/favourites (with an RSS feed!). Drupal is part of the mix there as well, but from what I can tell, it's a smaller part of the mix than my implementation.

Aggregator is now a contributed module, not part of core, as the Drupal core project has both expanded and simplified. I love it so much that I ported it to the fork of Drupal 7, Backdrop, and maintain it.
