DW Runners - the place to be

Dear F-circle,

If you're wondering where my Advent posts are this year, they are over at runners, the Dreamwidth runners community. We are very low-key, very supportive, we usually have some sort of monthly challenge (absolutely not a contest, we all give our own mileage/activity goals and then pool the distance to virtually run to interesting place). So if you're a runner or if you'd like to be a runner, or really do any sort of activity (walking, biking, dancing, swimming, aerobics, elliptical, rowing, time in the gym doing weights, physical therapy - anything that gets the blood pumping) and really try to be a supportive and welcoming environment. So come by and visit, and join if the inclination strikes.

We saw it last weekend and I haven't been able to stop thinking about Sam Wilson, flying, and Anthony Mackie since.

Grammar peeve #eleventybillion

Dear Internets,

Chaff is that stuff you separate from the wheat (or something you might use if you ever happen to be in an aerial dogfight http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaff_(countermeasure) ). Chafe is the thing that happens when things (literal or figurative) rub together uncomfortably.

Example sentence:

Boy is my skin chafed from sleeping on the barn floor with all the chaff left over from yesterday's threshing.

Special note to athlete bloggers and clothing reviewers: compression shorts probably do not help you with either grain processing or escaping the Luftwaffe.

core exercises

I still haven't finished the blog post that I'd meant to finish 2 days ago and I don't want that to stop anyone from starting so for anyone interested, Tuesday is a great day to start core exercises! I will be doing mine after I get a few other things done this afternoon.

So if you're interested, check out my recommended core exercises here or do your own set.

Report back here in comments with success, encouragement, questions, or anything else you'd like to say :-)

(If your back is really bad or it's been a while, start with superman, cobra, child's pose and maybe bridges. Only do very short sets of planks, boats, and dead bugs if at all.

If you have neck/shoulder problems, be very wary of superman (maybe try the easy version, but keep your head down, forehead on the floor) and also skip planks and boats - see franzi's comment below!)

the Iron Age has begun

Thank you all for your input, especially the folks who gave me good, thought-provoking comments. temve and I have talked a lot about it in the past few days and we have agreed that this is the year for me to do it. It's going to require that my current procrastination level needs to go way down (and therefore my internet reading: but basically that means I'm going to stop reading huge WIP fanfiction that don't have beta readers and basically make me weep with frustration at the destruction of the English language and not going to abandon everyone here. In fact, my internet time will probably get more interactive - i.e. yes, the blog has a true purpose now)

We have also agreed that a reevaluation in March of this goal is a perfectly valid step and we can afford to lose half the registration fee if I feel it's too much for me and I won't be successful.

Some things to remember:

1) Sane decision making is not a sign of failure. It is a sign of sanity and adulthood. OK I need to say it again. Making an informed and appropriate decision about pulling out - AT ANY POINT - if I need to is NOT A SIGN OF FAILURE. IT IS A SIGN OF MATURITY AND THE CORRECT ATTITUDE TOWARDS A HOBBY.

2) Finishing an Ironman does not somehow validate me as a person, no matter how cruel the other kids in elementary school were. I do not need to do this to prove my worth as a human being. Conversely, if I don't finish for any reason that does not make me a failure as a person or even a failure as an athlete.

3) While I acknowledge that the race itself probably won't be a lot of fun (well, I think it will be fun until I lace up my running shoes and rather less fun from that point on) the training should be enjoyable, have intrinsic worth, and not be a major stressor in my life. If it is, that is probably a sign that I'm doing something wrong and I need to reevaluate and revise what I am doing.

4) Getting up early in the morning is necessary for the successful ironic athlete. Remember, dawn is beautiful.

A final note on Ironman: One of the things that attracts me to it is the same thing that makes Waiting for Godot my favorite play and Camus and Ionesco some of my favorite writers. The utterly arbitrary nature of Ironman fascinates me to no end. The random distances, the specific order that they must be done, the bizarre and arcane regulations, the strange rituals at transition, the complete pointlessness of finishing as a middle of the pack age-grouper and paying for the privilege fascinate me to no end. I love the idea of doing this simply for the very sake of doing something so difficult and perverse. (Also, I'm a masochist)

...the fic where Fury decides the Avengers (and especially Tony) need more/better publicity and is approached by the World Triathlon Corporation (the folks that put on Ironman triathlons) with a proposal that would help them both out.

So Tony (as the only non-enhanced Avenger and therefore the only eligible athlete) gets an entry into the Kona Ironman (which the WTC loves because not only is he a superhero, but he also has a heart condition that he must overcome and they really really love the everyman sob stories for their Ironman TV broadcasts).

Then Steve has to keep locking up all his gear because he keeps making illegal enhancements to it. (but the remote control shifting and braking are acceptable, so they get to stay on his ridiculously expensive triathlon bike) And Hawkeye runs with him. And Steve hates swimming so Natasha helps with that. And Bruce and Jarvis work on nutrition plans. And Tony HATES early morning workouts. And Pepper used to be a mountain bike racer and keeps kicking his ass on the hills in Pennsylvania where they fly the bikes every weekend because it's the best riding on the east coast.

And at the end, everyone's there, Tony has a memorial bib that says he's running for Coulson, it's dark out, he's just finished, he gets the finisher medal and Mike Reilly says over the loudspeakers, "Tony Stark, Ironman, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN." And everybody's crying and laughing at the same time and Tony holds a giant luau at midnight for everyone who did the race with him.

So, um, yeah. Would anyone read crack like that?

Dear Internets,

If you can count it, and there aren't as many as before, you use fewer. For example: There are fewer people in the world who know the difference between less and fewer than there were twenty years ago.

If it's an uncountable thing, you use less. There is less water in my glass because I have drunk some. Perhaps I should replace it with vodka.

Fewer people care about these distinctions. I have less patience than I used to for grammar errors of this type. There is less vodka in the glass than earlier. I will add more and hope that more people treat these words with the respect they deserve.

As a consolation advent, have some Star Wars Snowflakes which were going to be yesterday's Advent until the wife made me one before I could make her one. Yoda is now gracefully floating in the tree near an origami crane and a little wire bicycle.
