Future Text Lab
We are a community of pragmatic futurists of coders, theorists, artists and people in general interested in the future of text, particularly in XR (VR/AR) for learning, thinking and communicating.
Join us: We host Open Lab Sessions every Monday. We also publish a series of Books & host the annual Future of Text Symposium.
Join us: We also lead the Advanced Document Working Group developing the Origami Text specification and proof-of-concept implementations which are free and open source.
XR Experiences
If you have access to a VR/AR headset please feel free to try the experiences we have built with Alfred P. Sloan Foundation support:
Readership in XR | Authorship in XR
We are currently discussing Author in visionOS as our case study.
Meet the People
The Future of Text Lab Team is hosted by Frode Hegland with an Advisory Board and wider community. This work is in support of The Future of Text Initiative.
If you are interested in getting involved by joining the weekly meetings or the symposium, please get in touch. 2024 and 2025 was part funded by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation
Our overriding goal is to inspire & enable powerfully useful XR workspaces & workflows. We hope you will find some of this inspiring to think a little deeper about what working in a fully immersive environment can be. We are building experiments to experience work in XR, we are working on scaffolding of thought. “When Knowledge Takes Shape” is an AI co-orchestrated music based on the goals of this group because this is about the future of text so perhaps we can get inspired via different media, different tones?
