Wilson war nicht nur die Erste, die in der englischen Übertragung die Zeilenzahl des griechischen Originals exakt beibehalten und den ganzen Text außerdem streng im fünfhebigen Jambus gehalten hat. Sie war vor allem die erste weibliche Übersetzerin ins Englische überhaupt. Der Streit, der in der Folge über die Frage entbrannt ist, ob das Geschlecht des Übersetzers für das Textverständnis überhaupt eine Rolle spielt, wurde gemessen am üblichen Umgangston in der Altphilologie geradezu heftig ausgetragen.
