Basically

This website is operated by me, Ken. It’s my home on the internet. A tiny sliver of cyberspace where I collect my thoughts and share ideas.

I publish (and syndicate, via RSS feed) blog posts, notes, etc. I also create and maintain various pages.

Style consistent with the short prose genre, occasionally veering toward prose poetry territory.

Typographically

Text is set in Verdana designed by Matthew Carter for Microsoft. I like it. It feels very, ‘of the internet’. Before @font-face was widely supported, I would use Verdana as a stand in for Gotham, which was very popular offline.

Technically

I use Blot to make this website. The template is custom. I create pages using iA Writer on macOS and iOS. I keep everything synced via git and push updates using the iOS app Working Copy.

My domain name is registered through Hover. I like them. The .fyi TLD is operated by Identity Digital and does not as far as I know perpetuate colonialism.

Pages on this website are designed to last.

The original website carbon calculator estimates that only 0.04g of CO2 is produced every time someone visits this web page, compared to 0.8g for the average web page.

Photographically

I use a 3:4 aspect ratio for photos in my photo stream. I try and use a 2:1 aspect ratio for most of the photos that accompany regular posts and pages. Those are the ones I have in my head, though I know there are exceptions.

I scale photos down to either 400 or 800 pixels wide. Sometimes I dither them, for effect and also to reduce their size. Does this sacrifice quality? Yes! But it makes for a lighter page, meaning less bandwidth used. They’re not technically remarkable photos anyways—more like the kind you’d get from a disposable camera. I’m usually more interested in the subject matter, the story the picture is telling both on its own and in sequence with other photos.

Occasionally I publish collections of photos, or include several images on a page. When I do, I try to note the page size (in KB or MB) wherever I link to the page, so that you know when you’re about to visit a (relatively) resource-heavy pages.

Stylistically

An aspirational style guide, of sorts, imperfectly applied:

No spaces around em dashes when marking a break in a sentence. En dashes to indicate a range of numbers or dates.

Oxford comma: Yes, yes, and yes.

Ethically

I do not track data on my site. (But others might.) No analytics, just plain old hypertext and the occasional media file.
