Title: Comes a Rainbow
Pairing: OT5 Feelings
Rating: PG, R for language
Disclaimer: As real as a not real thing.
Word count: ~7700
Summary: Written for this 1D kinkmeme prompt: Someone ... suffers from gender dysphoria and is considering/is going to undergo the transition from MTF. I'm just really looking for all of the boys to be super supportive/loving about everything, reading up about it, asking questions so they can be as well informed as possible, making a conscious effort to use female pronouns now instead of male. All that kind of stuff. I'm not looking for a specific pairing but I'm always partial to OT5 if you can make it work

I wrote it about Louis.

Read at AO3.

( cannot be replaced )

comments

When I'm not stressed out at work since the fourth quarter is the busiest time of year for us here in budget and finance at Ye Olde Wireless Provider Office (get better, economy, seriously, mama needs a new job!), I am gaming with NK. Or playing with the cats. Or playing with the cats while gaming. Anyway! I got into the beta for Star Wars: The Old Republic last weekend, and also bought Skyrim.

Not a lot of sleep was had last weekend. _@;;

I went into the SW:TOR beta apprehensive, because although I love me some Star Wars and still want to wake up as Princess Leia one day (make a wish when you're four and it sticks with you), I've been really disappointed in how the MMO has been turning out, from leaked footage and convention reveals. I dislike the graphical style immensely (lovely for a Saturday-morning cartoon, but I don't want it in my game, dammit), I dislike the way the emphasis on single-player storytelling puts a damper on coordinating gameplay between friends, and, it turns out, I don't really care for the way Bioware goes about telling stories in the first place.

That last bit isn't something I was aware of until I'd had the chance to compare and contrast my abortive experiences with Dragon Age: Origins, Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2, and this latest offering. I never managed to get very far with either of the single-player titles, and now I'm plowing through Skyrim excitedly and I suddenly realized, "oh, I guess I really don't like being trapped/"stranded" in a location and told I have to do any number of irritating things before I'm allowed to leave."

I never would have figured myself for a free-roaming world kind of girl, but even if I don't end up taking advantage of it most of the time (the NK is constantly stumbling upon things I've never seen, and I swear I've looked into every nook and cranny I can think of when I play), it's still nice to hear someone's plea for help, say, "sure, I'll get right to that," and have the freedom to wander the fuck off and go climb a mountain in the meantime if I want to. They and their problems will still be there when I get back, after all.

So, back to Star Wars: The Old Republic. Turns out I was surprised by how annoyed I was with it most of the time. I sent loads of feedback, not all of it scathing, but ultimately I didn't get far into any of the storylines I tried, and when the servers went down Sunday night, I uninstalled. The chatter on the server was positive coming from everyone else, though, so clearly I am not their target audience. I hope folks who shell out for it are happy with it.

Me, I'm waiting on Guild Wars 2 to end my sleep-filled nights.

If I ever get to sleep again after playing Skyrim, that is.

comments

The social life, she has exploded!

After the most recent snafu with Melkor the kitty (long story short: he is back home from his vet stay and integrated with the other cat and doing much better, thank you), the NK and I joined a very cool and very active local atheist group which was holding a viewing of the movie The Ledge, which is one of those rare movies with an openly atheist protagonist in a moral quandry (which only showed in like 4 US cities and was rated horribly but was actually quite good and stuck with us for some time afterward).

We also had a great time chatting with the members of the group and I can tell we're both really going to fit in well. And this group is SO ACTIVE! They've got things booked up every weekend and some off-weekends as well. We were a part of another atheist group in the Inland Empire that mostly got together for hiking and pub nights - not that there's anything wrong with that - but it wasn't our "thing," so much as philosophical debates and hosting atheist films and going to showings of Carl Sagan's Cosmos. And this group does all of that, so yay.

All that in between going to PAX, which was hectic and probably signals the end of my con-going days.... I just don't have it in me to stand in line 2 hours before the convention doors open and wrestle down a mob to get a place in (another) line at a demo station to play a game for 20 to 40 minutes, or for a CHANCE at a ticket or voucher for some cool swag. There was a time (back in my day *shakecane*) when the act of paying for tickets and flying across the country to attend a con was enough alone to show your fanaticism for something. Now it's merely the beginning. I'm too old for this if that's just the beginning.

I did, however, get to randomly enter a PvP tournament for Guild Wars 2, won the tournament, got to play against the game devs, was thoroughly trounced, but came away winning cool swag, so not too shabby! It almost made the trip worthwhile. Or, at least gave us stuff we could sell to pay off the bills incurred on the trip. (We won't sell the swag.)

But omg so busy! So many social activities all of a sudden! And (dare I say) potential friend-making! Why, I'm almost excited. XD

comments

Prior to the Game of Thrones fever I'm currently experiencing (NK has been pushing for me to read it for ages, but I resisted right up until about episode 3 of the HBO series, and now I'm on book 3, so huzzah), I decided to check out the Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson. I was interested in his work due to the much improved job he did on the last WoT book, because, seriously, anyone who can make Robert Jordan's plot move like that deserves some kudos.

I was won over by the backflap premise, of a hero of the ages who succeeds in defeating the darkness, and it turns out that he did a nice job breaking things instead. I was further intrigued by the fact that it seemed there was a female heroine who had great martial skills and more of a tomboyish (almost asexual) bent to her, and that that was portrayed as okay.

I was even okay with (or, at least, grudgingly accepted) that this was, visually-speaking, a European fantasy world full of white people and different cultures are only represented by accents and fashions, or "the place where the brown-haired people live" versus "the place where the fair-haired people live."

( in the end, though (spoilers through the end of Book 3, The Hero of Ages).... )

Finally, I have a list of recommendations for fantasy novels written with people of color in the main cast, but what I would like to know, because I'm not sure how to search for it - especially if I'm missing something - is if there are any novels/series that fall into a Western/European fantasy mold with characters of color in them. For example, I read the Lion's Blood series, which was a great alt history with African and Arab characters as the protagonists, but is culturally African and Arab, as you'd expect. I suppose, as a product of "Western"/North American culture and an anglophile, my wish would be to see poc characters in the typical knights and royalty and sorcery kind of world, rather than read fantasies set in other cultures.

I guess that's wishful thinking.

comments

This year, the NK and I went to the Anaheim Comic-Con for the first time, because we've found it impossible to get San Diego Comic-Con tickets since they tend to sell completely out in hours, and, hey, Anaheim is closer anyway. I was a bit reluctant at first because obviously this is a smaller con, and so doesn't pull quite the clout in actors, distributors, and quite the volume of anime fans the way you find bits of everything at SDCC.

Well, I'm eating my regret right now, because we had a most excellent time in just a few short hours. First of all, due to the smallness of the con, all of the guests were so accessible. I cannot express how cool it was to walk into the dealer hall and just walk by the likes of Claudia Christian, John DeLancie, Tori Higginson, Richard Picardo, Julie fucking Newmar, etc.

In fact, the NK and I had the opportunity to stop by and talk to Claudia, whose father was there and immediately took an interest in my t-shirt (I was wearing an atheist shirt that said "cogito, ergo deus non est" and I can tell you that I was not expecting to get into a discussion about the existence of god with Claudia Christian and her dad. They did not seem offended, however, and even wanted to take a picture of it. Whew! Bullet dodged!). Claudia signed two pictures and a copy of her CD for us, chatted with us about the possibility of any future Babylon 5 media coming out (possible, but not anything she expected to be involved with), and even the voicework she is currently doing for Guild Wars 2 - and dropped some impromptu British accents that were very awesome. Needless to say, the NK and I are still vibrating with excitement at having been able to chat with Susan Ivanova, shake her hand, and have her dad take a picture of me.

Second of all, the smallness of the con meant that guest panels were small as well. We were able to wander in to Nicholas Brendan's panel without any lines or security checks or passes examined (room half-capacity, sadly, though we noticed this theme recurring) and listen to the second half of a very funny Q&A. He concluded with the Snoopy Dance. :D :D :D. Later, we arrived early for Tricia Helfer's Q&A and were able to enjoy a performer who called himself Jedi Elvis singing re-written Elvis classics like Viva Mos Eisley :). Tricia's panel itself was again half-capacity, and she was extremely personable and affable and, among other talk about Six and BSG, told us about the new show she had just shot the pilot for, Seventeenth Precinct. She also talked about the projects she's been working on with Katee Sackoff, and their friendship, which.... makes me.... want to slash them. >_> <_<

So, yes, I am extremely glad that we decided to go to WizardWorld this year instead of just feeling sorry for ourselves that we didn't get tickets to the San Diego CC. The folks we met were fantastic and I would never have been able to even get close to them had we been in San Diego due to the massive amounts of people there (imagine wandering through the dealer hall and running into someone from a famous Sci-Fi franchise!). It was most awesome and I think we just got ourselves plans for next year!

comments

Well, I had really been hoping to make my Penny Arcade Expo debut this year in Seattle, in large part because Guild Wars 2 will be there with playable demos (and promised "big" plans that I'm hoping is an announced release or beta date!!!11!!1) but the plane fare for the NK and I would be over $500.

Five hundred bucks for three days of standing in line to play a game demo, on top of the $60 registration fee? Yeah, uh, I am really excited about GW2 - really REALLY excited - but not $500 excited. It makes me sad, though. I was really looking forward to the con. Still, yeesh, that plane fare is ridonkulous. (do... do the cool kids still say ridonkulous?)

comments

Browsing the internet for highly-reviewed ways to cut down on oily skin (as I am wont to do from time to time, since oily skin has been the bane of my existence from about age 10 to present day), I stumbled upon a forum that had a ton of women gushing about, of all things, Milk of Magnesia used as a primer.

They said it was a "thing" they'd seen on YouTube and they swore by it. So I went to YouTube.

And, what do you know, it's a thing.

I haven't had a chance to try it out yet, having just seen this within the past 24 hours, but I'm simply chomping at the bit to give this a shot for work tomorrow.

(I kind of wish I'd found this out before the wedding, as I was pretty darned shiny by mid-afternoon - and the wedding started at noon - but OH WELL, at least all the good pictures had been taken by then :P)

(also, hey, it's our 6-monthiversary today)

comments

Black Norn? Awww yeah. Take that, people who assumed that a race of 9-foot tall magical shape-shifting barbarians would necessarily conform to the melanin levels of the human culture on which they are only loosely based.

This is the latest lore/image piece out of ArenaNet in the ramp up for the Penny Arcade Expo (East) in which they'll be unleashing a new playable demo of the game and YES I DID CONSIDER TAKING A DAY OFF SO I COULD FLY TO THE EAST COAST AND STAND IN LINE FOR THE DEMO, DON'T JUDGE ME

The NK and I are playing Rift right now and it's fine, very lovely to look at and all, but I'm so excited about Guild Wars 2 that most other games just pale in comparison, eagerness-wise.

Perhaps when it comes out I can generate some sort of ficcy fandom around that. I hear there will be possibilities to have NPCs fall in love with you, though how egalitarian these options will be remains to be seen. I'm skeptical that ANet will take the open and affirming stance, but given that Regina Buenaobra is GW2's Community Manager and does a lot of feminist/anti-racist commentary, I'm... somewhat hopeful?

comments
