# Redeeming Render Credits

If you've received a promo code for Render credits, see below for redemption details.

## Steps to redeem

1. In the [Render Dashboard](https://dashboard.render.com), make sure you're in the workspace you want to redeem credits for.
     - Credits are not transferable between workspaces.
2. Click *Billing* in the left pane.
3. Scroll down to the *Credit Balance* section and enter your promo code.
4. Click *Apply*.

You're all set! The *Billing* page reflects your workspace's new credit balance. Your credits are automatically applied to eligible charges at the end of each billing period, starting with your next bill.

## FAQ

###### How are credits applied?

*At the end of each monthly billing period:*

1. Render calculates your workspace's total bill for the month.
2. Render deducts that amount from your credit balance (or as much as is available, if your credit balance is insufficient).
3. If your credit balance is insufficient, Render charges the remaining amount to your workspace's payment method.

Your credit balance only decreases at the _end_ of a billing period. Credits are not applied immediately when you redeem a promo code or incrementally with your paid usage.

Render does not apply credits to outstanding charges from previous months.

###### Which costs are eligible for credits?

Unless a particular promotion indicates otherwise, Render applies credits to any costs accrued by your workspace. This includes your plan fee, compute usage, bandwidth, and so on. For the full list, see [what Render bills for](faq#what-does-render-bill-for).

###### Why does my promo code fail to redeem?

Promo code redemption usually fails due to one of the following reasons:

- The promo code has expired.
- The promo code has already been redeemed.
- Your workspace has already redeemed credits from this promotion or from a related promotion.
    - Render limits which promotions can be combined for a given workspace.

###### Does adding credits automatically move me to a paid plan?

No. Render does not make any changes to your workspace or services when you add credits.

- To increase a particular service's compute resources, you can [upgrade its instance type](compute-plans#changing-a-services-compute-plan).

###### When do promo codes and credits expire?

*Expiration varies depending on the specific promotion or event*. For details, please confirm with the Render representative who provided your promo code.

Promo codes distributed during an event (such as a hackathon) usually expire shortly after the event ends. Make sure to redeem your code promptly.
