Trying Out an ATAPI Zip drive again
One of the first things I bought with my own money as a kid was an internal 100 MB Iomega Zip drive with an ATAPI interface. I remember asking my computer teacher Mr Jones where he’d got his, and he wrote me a referral that got me a bit of a discount, which was great. I used that drive for everything for years, amassing a small tower of the grey disks and their jewel cases. I envied the MO disks my Japanese friends had, but I couldn’t fault my Zip drive.
A couple of decades later I took my first computer out of proverbial storage, and the Zip drive was the only component that had failed in the intervening years. It didn’t even get a chance to exhibit the Click of Death, it just refused to power on at all. I kept the drive bezel as a memento, and to use for an art project I never quite got off the ground. I since acquired an unusual blue SCSI internal Zip drive that took it place for several years, but that ended up going into my Power Mac G3 to take the place of a missing drive. So what to do with my original machine?
Enter my father in law again! Thousands of kilometres away from me at the time, he had also bought the exact model of Zip drive for his family, and had received some disks from work. He’s been doing a deep clean and purge of his house this year, and keeps uncovering weird and wonderful computer treasures from the 1980s and 90s. Upon finding his Iomega kit, he asked if I wanted to mess with any of it. Naturally I said yes! He didn’t know if it worked, but I was willing to give it a try.
Here’s my original PC with a beige ATAPI zip drive again:

I set the jumpers to Cable Select on the same IDE connection as the optical drive, just as I did the first one at the time. For reasons I couldn’t fathom at the time, setting drives manually on this IDE controller was always a crapshoot, and CS just worked.
Would it detect this “new” Zip drive?

Donezo! And as much of a SCSI fan as I was/am, it detected it far quicker than the SCSI controller did the SCSI Zip drive. I was able to boot into both Windows 95 and MS-DOS (the last machine I own that hasn’t yet been moved to DR DOS 6), and the drive was immediately detected by the Iomega Tools. I popped in a disk, and it worked immediately. Next step is to swap out the SanDisk boot CF card for my NetBSD one and check dmesg(8).
This first computer I built myself now has the original model of Zip drive I had installed into it. That’s awesome. Now I just need a Mitsumi CD-ROM, and it’ll look as it did in 1998, when I was a young computer nerd with optimism and joy for the future of the tech world.

I wouldn’t trust any data I care about to these old drives, but it’s fun for experimentation and tinkering. This breed of “superfloppy” never completely usurped the 3.5-inch floppy before optical coasters took over, but they were a mainstay for power users. I’d even go as far as saying the CD burner felt like a downgrade: I couldn’t treat optical media as a floppy like I could Zip or Jaz disks. By the time DVD-RAM came about, we were all using USB keys.
I might run some benchmarks on the ATAPI and SCSI drives, for no practical reason other than I’m curious.
