Review: Ghost Ship by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller

Ghost Ship by Sharon Lee

Theo Waitley has met her father’s Clan and been Seen by the Delm of Korval now, at the end of both I Dare and Saltation. She does not, however, consider herself of Korval — she is a Waitley, as is reasonable for a young woman raised in a matrilineal culture. She did, however, take two issues to the Delm for solving, and one has been resolved: she has been reunited with her missing father.

However, she also carries the Captain’s key to the sentient ship Bechimo, and that ship is looking for her. The Delm chose to put that issue aside, trusting that it would solve itself, given enough time. How much time, though, and in what manner?

In the meantime, she acts as a courier for Uncle, one obviously known to the Clan and not as an ally — although not necessarily as an enemy, either. As his courier, she flies his ship, Arin’s Toss, which is hunted by his enemies, including the Department of the Interior.

Theo acquits herself as well as any child of Korval could in meeting her challenges. She continues to experience more than the usual number of them, though, because of her Terran rearing and Liaden appearance. It seems to me that a father as dutiful as Jen Sar Kiladi (or Daav yos’Phellium) would have given her more preparation to encounter Liaden society.

Ghost Ship certainly isn’t limited to Theo’s story. We rejoin Val Con and pregnant Miri as they move to Surebleak, and check in with Daav as he settles in to being Daav again after his long sojourn as Kiladi. There are also appearances by Pat Rin, Natesa, Quin, Padi, Shan, and other family members. Definitely, an ensemble cast this time out, and just as absorbing as fans have come to expect.

Sharon Lee and Steve Miller continue to please with this latest installment in the Liaden Universe series. Theo Waitley, now First Pilot on the sentient ship Bechimo, is in the process of deciding whether she’s going to bond with the ship permanently as its Captain. She and the Bechimo are being pursued, together and separately, by the Department of the Interior. Despite that fact, she goes out to establish a new trade route for Clan Korval, with former Juntavas Boss Clarence O’Berin sitting as Co-pilot.

Theo’s former lover Win Ton is confined in Bechimo’s restructuring facility, something a step beyond the autodoc, where he is being rebuilt cell by cell after being tortured by the Department of the Interior in its pursuit of the Bechimo. There’s no guarantee that Win Ton will survive the process, or what shape he’ll be in when it is completed.

They aren’t far into the route when they receive a distress signal from space station Codrescu, in orbit around Eylot, the planet where Theo began training as a Pilot. The political situation on Eylot has come to a head, and all Pilots there are in danger. Codrescu has put out an emergency call for help, so Theo takes Bechimo to the rescue — despite the fact that she has good reason to never want to see that system again.

Theo is a very young woman, but growing by leaps and bounds. She makes any decision that doesn’t rely on social intelligence very well, guided by good basic instincts and other types of intelligence. Her social skills still leave much to be desired, but she’s slowly improving those and she knows she has a weakness in that area.

It is always a joy to read a Liaden novel, but watching Theo grow up adds a new dimension of pleasure to the reading. While I’ve paused to read and re-read some of the chapbooks in order to put off the time before I ran out of new material, the time is here now. I’m back to the same old complaint: I want more, now! Please?

The Gathering Edge by Sharon Lee

A most satisfying entry in the Liaden Universe series, number 20 begins and ends with plenty of action. Indeed, the reader hardly has time to take a breath for all the action! The characters themselves must be exhausted – I feel so in their behalf.

I enjoyed this part of Theo’s story rather more than previous books about her, perhaps because others played a larger part in the story. She isn’t my favorite of the series’ protagonists, to be honest, but then I still hope for more of Priscilla Delacroix y Mendoza.

I finished Ribbon Dance a couple of days ago. I took my time to savor the book rather than devouring it all in one go (or close) as I have done with other books in this series. It is immensely enjoyable and eminently satisfying.

The book is densely plotted. Almost all of it takes place on Colemeno, a planet that was inaccessible to most of the galaxy until very recently. There are a few scenes on the Dutiful Passage, the main characters’ ship, which is orbiting Colemeno. The plot is largely social, as the traders acclimate to new mores and work to establish equitable trade agreements with the planet. There is some excitement, but this is not a shoot-em-up space opera.

This book has inspired me to start a re-read of the series. There are very few books that I’m willing to read more than once, but Lee & Miller’s works are all among them.

This volume won’t make much sense to new series readers. Several other books do offer good entry points—Agent of Change and Fledgling come to mind.

I’m an unabashed fangirl of Sharon Lee and (the late) Steve Miller. I was terribly upset when I read that Steve had died, and I teared up again when I read Sharon’s afterword to Ribbon Dance. I’m very happy to know that the series will go on.

I just re-read Storm Front, after first reading it – well, I don’t even know how many years ago! Shortly after it was first released, I think.

Now, it’s important to know that I simply don’t re-read books. I find that too boring, most of the time. There are a scant few exceptions. The Liaden Universe books by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller are the most remarkable of them. The fact that I would even consider a re-read speaks very, very highly of Butcher’s work.

I’d forgotten far more than I expected, but I suppose that happens, with at least 15 years and goodness knows how many books in between readings. I knew it was a good book, I knew one important part of the ending (I mean, come on – there are many more books in the series, so you KNOW that Dresden lives!), but all else was lost. I wasn’t sure I would like reading about old Harry with recent Harry fresh in my mind (I just read the short story “Jury Duty”).

If anything, I enjoyed it even more spiced by the knowledge of who Dresden (and Murphy) will become in the future books. I enjoyed the setting, the craft that went into building the whole novel, and seeing how Butcher’s skill grew from the first book to the more recent works.

I’m going to go on with re-reading the entire series – I hadn’t committed to it before, but now I’m looking forward to it!

Historical fiction isn’t my favorite genre, but I’m much more willing to read it when it’s mixed with mystery. I’ve read some of Hambly’s work before and know her to be a fine writer, and I’d read good reviews of this series by people I respect, so I decided to give it a whirl.

Unusual Suspects: Stories of Mystery & Fantasy by Dana Stabenow

My review

Another uneven anthology. I still have it in my hands, so I’ll try to hit each story briefly.

“Lucky” by Charlaine Harris – Sookie is much easier to take in short form. I can’t help it, the woman grates on me (in the TV show even worse than in the books). The other characters keep me reading.

“Bogieman” by Carole Nelson Douglas – Delilah Street does more than grate on my nerves in long form. She’s more palatable in short form, too, but there are reminders of why I don’t intend to read more in that series.

“Looks are Deceiving” by Michael A. Stackpole – If I’ve read any of Stackpole’s work before, it’s been in anthologies, and I don’t remember it. I did wonder if this short story is set in a universe he uses in longer works, though. It wasn’t bad at all.

“The House of Seven Spirits” by Sharon Shinn – I loved this story! And how often do you say that about a haunted house tale? I must track down and read some of Shinn’s novels. Any suggestions?

“Glamour” by Mike Doogan – The Peasantry Anti-Defamation League might be after Doogan if he isn’t careful at least, representatives of the male peasantry). The story was cute, and it did make me laugh.

“Spellbound” by Donna Andrews – This is another author whose books are going on my (groaning) to-read shelf. The story hit a few clichés, but was fun enough to get away with them.

“The Duh Vice” by Michael Armstrong – Ugh. A little too preachy, and way too much anti-fat prejudice.

“Weight of the World” by John Straley – Where does Santa Claus go in the off-season? That’s the biggest question answered in this piece. The “mystery” was “solved” nearly as soon as it was discovered.

“Illumination” by Laura Anne Gilman – Bonnie’s back story! I think a bit of this story is used in the first chapter of Gilman’s first PUPI novel, but I’ll know more when I get my hands on it. It’s a must-read for fans of the Cosa Nostradamus universe, though.

“The House” by Laurie R. King – could we maybe call a hiatus on the abused-kid stories? Maybe I’m hypersensitive, but I’m tired of them.

“Appetite for Murder” by Simon R. Green – is another dark Nightside story. I don’t think I’ll ever need to read more in that universe.

“A Woman’s Work” by Dana Stabenow – I’m an unabashed Stabenow fangirl. Despite that, I wasn’t sure how she’d do in a fantasy setting. She proved herself, certainly. I can only hope that we’ll see longer fantasy works from her in print at some juncture.

YAY!

We were fairly sure of this right after I finally had my Social Security hearing last month based on the very positive statements from the judge, but I didn’t want to jinx anything. We got the official letter in the mail today, saying that the decision was “fully favorable!” SQUEE!

It will still take some time for that decision to bounce around the bureaucracy and get monthly payments started, much less get the back pay from the SSA. Because the onset date was years ago, I should be eligible for Medicare right away, but I’ll need to talk to the attorney about that on Monday.

I really needed some good news, so the timing is marvelous.

This process has been an insane endurance contest. The fact that the SSA has been absolutely obstructionist throughout (and I know my experience is far from unique!) is ridiculous. The system demands that people who are most in need of help are least likely to get it in any timely fashion because it takes so much persistence, jargon, and inside knowledge to get anywhere. If you can do all those forms and gather all the records and so on by yourself, I don’t know that you should count as disabled! Even people with good support in other ways don’t always have someone willing, able, and persistent who can and will spend the hours and hours of time to push a claim through.

I started the filing process for one reason: I needed stable access to healthcare so that I could get well enough to go back to work. Five years down the line, I’m not at all sure that I will be able to return to work, because my health has deteriorated so much that it may not be possible to get back to an “abled” state. How many years of productive lives are being in the U.S. wasted for lack of access to healthcare?

I get annoyed every time I hear a talking head refer to plans to “insure” everyone. That isn’t what we need! Plenty of people have health insurance and still don’t get the actual health care they need because they can’t afford the co-pays, the insurer won’t cover a particular drug or therapy, there are pre-existing condition problems, or…

We need health care. Not divided up by age (this for kids, that for seniors, something else for working-age people, oh, right, the disabled here) but universal care, the same care for everyone, for the whole body, cradle to grave. (Whoever decided that eyes and teeth should be separated out, anyway? That’s stupid.)

I read an article about San Francisco’s health program last week—if I can find a link I’ll add it later. It does just what I described, from what that article says. I don’t know how much it costs to join, but apparently, there’s a lot of outreach to people who are otherwise uninsured. There are no pre-existing conditions.

Does anyone know of programs like San Francisco’s elsewhere in the U.S.?

Time Flies

I used to get so annoyed when my mother would say, “Twenty years from now, nobody will know the difference.” She was wrong in a sense—I certainly still know the difference, about so very many things.

On the other hand, I do understand the longer view much better now. Twenty years seemed like such a long time then, and now? It’s so very short.

In any case, Katie did get home from her trip to the great northwest. She had a marvelous time and thinks she has found her school.

I’m really proud of her. She planned this trip, to a place neither she nor any of us had ever been before, all by herself. She went without a qualm, had a marvelous time, managed her money perfectly, and made some great new friends.

Since then she also went to her first LARP. Again, she had a marvelous adventure, had lots of fun, and found a new thing she enjoys. I think we need to acquire camping equipment.

Sam has started playing Burning Wheel with a group of local people. He really enjoys the game. I’m glad to see him getting out and having some social time with others.

I had a big thing happen, but I’m going to stay quiet about it a little longer, ’til it’s also a sure thing.

In the meantime, I’ve found a nice outlet for my OCD urges as a “librarian” at Goodreads.

It’s working! And sundry links

Now that the whole crossposting thing is working, I plan to continue reducing my presence on Facebook. I often post things there to remember them, but I can’t find them later when I want them. So it makes much more sense, of course, to post them here. There’s also the fact that Meta can’t make money off me if I’m not over there.

So – we went to Mom’s place today to visit and fix things. Rick wasn’t able to get her living room television to power on. It has always had an annoying tendency to intermittently refuse to power on. At least TVs are cheaper now than when this huge thing was purchased. If she replaces it quickly, she might get ahead of the tariffs.

I worked on her computer while Rick was occupied with that. She has a tendency to get overwhelmed with 2FA prompts and the like, so I try to keep the accounts she uses happy. I am still working through the list of Daddy’s accounts, trying to get them all switched over to use her phone instead of his, or just getting them closed.

I enjoyed visiting with her. Losing Daddy so suddenly reinforced thoughts I had been having for a while. I’m very fortunate to still have one parent, and I won’t take her presence for granted.

Book Review: Dead End (Crossroads Queen series) by Annabel Chase

I got through eight books of this nine-book series. The main character makes the same very serious mistakes over and over again, but there was enough progress that I kept reading.

HOWEVER, in book nine she started to make the most serious of those mistakes AGAIN, and I was done. I no longer care about her fate or that of the many lives entwined with hers.

You win, Annabel Chase! This is the second of your series that you ran me slap out of, and it was with exactly the same issue: the main character being too stupid to breathe. If these books weren’t available on Kindle Unlimited, I wouldn’t have given you a second chance. I’m sorry that I did so, now.

Diviner’s Bow by Sharon Lee
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I stretched this one out as long as I could manage it, because I was enjoying it so much, and I never want any of the Liaden Universe books to end. I love this series and its authors!

The prose in these books is always just perfect to my ear. The plot involved some bad guys, but they seemed almost irrelevant most of the time. It was mainly a sweet visit with lovely people having intelligent conversations. I want to live in this universe.

This novel does not offer a jumping-in point to the new Liaden reader. To understand it, you must be conversant with the events of the last few books, and it helps to have read all that came before. Don’t worry, it’s all delicious!

I learned something infuriating today!

Why do most women give birth (in the United States, anyway) while lying on their backs? Is it the most comfortable way to do it? Nope.

It goes back to Louis the XIVth and his thing about watching his mistresses deliver his offspring. He didn’t like having anything obstruct his view, so he insisted they lie on their backs.

It came to be the standard in the U.S. around 1900. Many women had started delivering babies in hospitals attended by doctors, and the supine position was more manageable for doctors than other positions.

I already wished I could have had a midwife and a doula to help when my daughter was born. This knowledge makes it that much more of a wish!

Have I?

Have you ever unintentionally broken the law?

There’s a WordPress Daily Prompt that I’ve never really noticed before. Today’s question caught my eye, though.

Yes, I’m sure that I’ve unintentionally broken the law at some point in the past.

Our ridiculous tangle of city, county, state, and federal laws mean that there’s absolutely no way for anyone to truly know every statute, much less to understand them and how they interact. I don’t think lawyers can really accomplish that. I’m sure law enforcement personnel don’t know them all. Judges? Well, they have staff to help them, but no, I don’t think they know all the laws for every situation.

I’m not going to confess to anything, even possible offenses for which the statute of limitations is long past. I’m not looking for trouble, and that sounds like a good way to find it.

We definitely need to simplify our legal code.

Bad Google!

I’ve had a Google account since 2004, when you needed an invitation to join. I had previously used an email on this domain, and I have been transitioning most of my email back to that for the past year or so. Current events have me looking at how I can get off Google Calendar and any other services.

Google Calendar removes Black History Month, Pride, and other cultural events

The problem is that Rick needs a Google account because he uses an Android phone. He’s not open to transitioning to the Apple ecosystem. (I’m firmly in it.) We need interoperable calendars.

Proton and iCloud are options. I don’t know how well they interact with Google, but I’ll find out.

And then there are all those sites where I’ve chosen to “log in with Google.” I’ve begun to track them down and switch to other login methods, but many don’t make that easy.

What calendar do you use? What other alternatives do you know of for Google services?

Monday means crochet

I’ve only been crocheting for a little while. Apparently, February is National Hobby Month or something similar, so the leader of the Women’s ERG at work asked us about our hobbies. Another woman and I mentioned crochet, and we found ourselves volunteered to teach. Every Monday this month, we’ve gathered to crochet during or just after lunch. Fortunately, the other woman is much farther along the process. She’s been crocheting for over a year and has made some fantastic things. I’m still limping along and looking up how to do each stitch.

Anyway, I’ve come to look forward to Mondays because of our gatherings. They’re lovely. We’re talking about continuing them after the month is over. I hope we do!

It has been a long day!

Yeah, 4:30 am was a long time ago, especially since it came after a night that was interrupted for an hour.

I have a lot of trouble with hypoglycemic episodes in the middle of the night. I wear a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) because my sugar is volatile, and I have hypoglycemic unawareness. It’s a damned good thing I have the CGM. Without it, I wouldn’t have known that my sugar was going dangerously low.

Hypoglycemia is defined as a blood glucose level lower than 70 mg/dL. There are three levels: Level 1 is under 70 but above 54. Level 2 is under 54, and according to the CDC, that’s defined as severe hypoglycemia. The American Diabetes Association explains level 3 as: “Your blood glucose has affected your ability to think or control your body, so you need help to treat it.”

My CGM occasionally gives me crazy readings. It has to be calibrated using an old-fashioned meter that works by pricking my fingers, so I still have one on hand.

When I woke up to the CGM alarm around midnight last night, the CGM said my sugar level was 53. I got some juice and a snack, then tested using the old-fashioned meter. It said my sugar was at 33.

My endocrinologist got excited (not in a good way) when I reported some measurements in the low forties last year. I don’t think he would approve of 33. I have a Glucagon kit, but I’m not supposed to use it unless I can’t take in carbohydrates by mouth. Rick has been instructed in its use in case I pass out.

I try very hard not to wake Rick when I get up in the middle of the night, but we’ve agreed that I will always wake him for any measurement under 50. Of course, I had to wake him. Happily, the juice did its job. Eventually. We were up for about an hour.

The CGM alarm went off again at 4:30. I got up and ran the whole drill again. This time, at least, my sugar only went down to 44. I had to wake Rick again. He went back to bed around 5:30. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to sleep, so I just got coffee.

There were three things on my calendar today. I made it to all three, although I was dragging. I’m grateful that the last one ended early.

Because now, I can go to bed!

What a day!

I didn’t even have time to read my personal email today until after work, when I usually do that before the workday starts. Despite meetings, I wrote and published a whole section of knowledge base articles. However, I wasn’t able to crochet through today’s meetings.

I love my job. My employer is great, and they treat me well. There are days, though, when I remember being at home with Katie and my stepkids and miss it. There were other good things about those years, too. But now is pretty damned good.

How do you relax?

The dumpster fire that is our country has me spending more time thinking about self-care. How can I care for myself so I don’t burn out or blow up? What do you do?

I’m going to try limiting my exposure to news to earlier in the day. Hopefully, that will help me ruminate less when I should be sleeping. If I just do pleasant things each evening, that will lead to better sleep, right?

Rick and I are watching the old Xena series on DVD. The show was special for me and my daughter when she was little, and she’s watching it with her daughter now. We didn’t have cable TV,¹ so we never got to see all of the episodes or see them in order. It’s interesting to remember seeing the later episodes while watching the early ones.

I’ve put my latest crochet project next to my desk. If I’m in a meeting that doesn’t require taking notes, I pick it up to keep my hands busy. That’s calming. I received the fibers for a blackwork project, but I need to prepare the fabric and get started.

I’ve been reading more, and it’s all pure escapist fiction. Okay, not 100%. I’m listening to Eve: How the Female Body Drove 200 Million Years of Human Evolution for a book club at work. But Goodreads says I’ve read 19 books so far this year, and most of it has been fiction. That’s way ahead of my normal pace.

I want to fit more music into my life this year. I joined the mailing list for a new-to-us house concert series, and I put all the local coffeehouses on my calendar. That makes it more likely that we’ll make it to one or two a month.

My D&D group is only meeting monthly, but I’m not sure I could fit a more frequent game into our schedule. I still miss playing more frequently, though, and if I find another game that I can work in, I’ll do it.

We’ve been playing other sorts of games more frequently at home, too. One of us grabs a random game off the shelves at least once a week. The most recent one was Recipes for Disaster by Exploding Kittens, which Rick gave me for Yule. We need to have some folks over to play some of our other games, which really need more than two players. I gave Rick Firefly Adventures: Brigands and Browncoats a while back, which can be played by one or two players. It would be more fun with two or three more people, though.

Rick was doing his dailies for Diablo, but now that he’s done, it’s time for me to log off!

I feel so much better for having even a low level dose of pain killers that I’m having to honestly ask myself – did I just throw away a lot of what I could have done in the last few years due to stubborness?

My doctor had first prescribed Celebrex back around 1998-99. My insurer absolutely refused to cover it, so she had me take Vioxx instead. Vioxx tears up my stomach horribly, and never seemed to make enough of a difference to matter. That’s one of the reasons I felt that RX meds just weren’t going to do enough, and stuck with the ibuprofen at dangerous levels.

But even without time to build up in my system as it’s supposed to have, I’m feeling so much better now that I can hardly describe it.

I’m hoarding the Ultracet. I took one right after class yesterday, but even before taking it I knew I was going to have to get a nap. The need for naps is really frustrating. My doctor said I’m supposed to have bed rest every 30-60 minutes, but I didn’t want to pay attention to that. My body has other ideas.

I have a 9am meeting with the VP to whom the financial aid folks report. Maybe something will finally get done now.

My friend’s father died last night. Thank you for the prayers and thoughts. Her stepmother and sister are completely shocked, and I’m worried about her having to be responsible for everything, so continued energy is appreciated.
