Whisper, from OpenAI, is an open source speech recognition tool that also does translation. You can try it right now at https://replicate.com/openai/whisper or install it on your own computer to run privately. You provide an audio file, and it emits a text transcript as well as .srt and .vtt subtitle files.

This is a really useful (and free!) tool. I have started using it regularly to make transcripts and captions/subtitles, and I just wrote a blog post to share how, and why -- plus my reflections on the ethics of using it and similar tools trained using machine learning.

Note that it works on existing files, but does not work for live-transcribing an event as it's happening.

Speculative Literature Foundation seeking volunteer transcriptionists

Just found this lovely comm, and wanted to blab about another online caption/subtitle creator:
Fanscribed.

Fanscribed is a no-cost site designed for fanswarms to create transcripts of podcasts. It offers an "edit" view, where you can listen to and input text in 30 second chunks. There's rewind and timing info, but not a lot more: no speech-to-text to provide a starting point.

Fanscribed.com hosts the transcripts the fans create. (They also host one instance of the audio for transcription purposes, but do not serve it to other listeners.) The longest-running show using the system is MetaFilter's "Best of the Web" podcast. If you're curious about this choice, you can read this (typically rambling) MetaFilter text thread of how MetaFilter decided to go with Fanscribed.

It's definitely not as polished as Amara, and it doesn't seem to be designed to make it easy to pass a project from volunteer to paid worker (or back). It's an open-source labor of love. The person person seems to be an adept programmer, and it needs the right sort of support from the kind of people you know so well.

It could be a very useful tool where people don't have internet access all the time.

I was looking at sophie's post a few years back and saw that "Universal Subtitles" is now (I think) called Amara. And there's a Captions Requested team:

Request: transcripts of technical/programming talks

I've posted at my weblog recommendations of seven programming-related presentations, including links to audio or video recordings and slides/handouts. The specific ones I would really like transcripts for are:

A Dozen Databases in 45 Minutes

Cache me if you can: memcached, caching patterns and best practices

Fundraising: Under the Hood

but I would be happy with transcripts of any or all of them. (You can ignore "Freedom, Security, and the Cloud" as the recording is not yet available online.) I would very strongly prefer to be able to publicly link to and share the transcripts and credit the transcriptionist in some way (pseudonym is fine). And there's no particular time restriction or deadline.

I myself have already heard and understood all these presentations so the transcripts would be for ease of sharing rather than to fulfill an immediate need on my part.

[opening credits fade in on head & shoulders of black woman]

My sister-in-law, uh, who's half-black, half white, but looks white, blue eyes, whiter than most white folks -- very white. Uh, she and I, you know, we kind of grew up together, we raised our children together, uh, so they're first cousins, so, you know, wonderful, very very multi-cultural family.

So we going into Safeway, one day, and, uh, Kathleen, my- my sister-in-law's in front of me, and she's uh, you know, writing a cheque for her groceries. Now my daughter, who at the time was ten years old, was standing with me, and I was directly behind her, you know, getting ready to get my groceries, so Kathleen comes up, and the checker, who was a strawberry blonde, um, freckled, very delightful, warm, um, you know, the checker, this young woman, is talking to Kathleen -- [big grin, higher pitched voice, very enthusiastic] "Hey! How you doing? Isn't it a nice day today?" So they're just chatting up, and yeah, so Kathy writes her cheque, and she steps off to the side with her groceries, 'coz she's waiting for me. Course, again, Kathleen looks white, right? So I come up. -- No conversation. She looks up at me. Absolutely no - just, little chatter - and, uh, I write my cheque.

My daughter, however, is ten, notices immediately the difference in how she responds to me. So I write my cheque, and she goes, "I'm going to need two pieces of ID." At which point my daugher looks at me, and she gets very very embarrassed, and tears are- are kinda coming up in her eye, like, "Mommy, you're not gonna - you're not gonna let her do this? Why is she doing this to us?", right? So I'm trying to figure out what I should do, cause behind me are two elderly white women, right? [laughs] Now I'm thinking, okay, so then I become The Angry Black Woman, right? [laughs] And they're gonna be - and I just, I'm- I'm just trying to second-guess all the drama. So then I- I just give her the two pieces of ID, yes, and you know, some things you gotta choose your battles, right. And then it gets worse. She pulls out the Bad Check Book, right? [laughs] So this - this is the book that shows people who've written bad checks. So she starts searching for my licence in the bad checks, at which point, it's just - out of control, now. [cut]

Just as I'm standing there, um, trying to decide what to do, and this really deeply humilitating, I mean, now my daughter is in full-blown emotionally upset, who's ten, [voice gets quieter] my sister-in-law walks back over. [small smile] And she steps in [points finger], and she says, "Excuse me. Why are you doing this?" And the checker goes, "Well - what do you, what do you mean?" She [Kathleen] goes, "Why are you taking her through all of these changes? Why are you doing that?" She [checker] goes, "Well um, this is our policy." She [Kathleen] goes, "No it's not your policy, because you didn't do that with me." "Oh well, [dismissive hand gesture] I know you, you've been-" She [Kathleen] goes, "No no, she's been here for years [points with thumb], I've only lived here for three months." And so at this point [grins], the two white eldery ladies go, [high-pitched, breathy, taken aback] "Oh! I can't believe what this checker has done with this women, it is totally unacceptable!" At which point [laughing], the manager walks over!

So the manager walks over and says, "Is there a problem here?" And then my sister-in-law again responds. She goes, "Yes, there is a problem here. Here is what happened." So you see, she used her white privilege, and even though Kathleen is half-black and half-white, she recognises what that means, and she made the statement, she pointed out the injustice, and she as a result of that one act [holds up one finger] influenced [makes encircling motion with index fingers] everyone in that space.

But what would have happened - I can't know for certain - had the black woman [indicating herself] said, "This [downward pointing finger] is unfair, why [downward finger] are you doing this to me?" Would it have had the same impact? But Kathleen knew that she walked through the world differently than I did, and she used her white privilege, to educate and make right a situation that was wrong. That's what you can do, every single day [smiles].

Oral history transcripts

Hello transcribers! A friend of mine is doing a local history exhibition (the website is Documenting Broad Green) and has several audio clips that need to be transcribed, but she's too short of time to do them all herself before the exhibition launches on 22 March.

I told her that transcripts could help! She's asked us to do the transcripts relating to the cinema at Broad Green.

"Clive Locke talks about entertainment in Broad Green in the 1960s/70s" has already been done. I will do "Bill Mansfield remembers Broad Green in the 1980s". There are five others to do, ranging from 28 seconds to 2 minutes 25 seconds. Any volunteers?

Edited to add: These have all now been done.

This video is an exposé by a parent of an autistic child on the bullying that he was experiencing at the hands of teachers. The actual clips of the teachers' conversation are partially transcribed on screen-- there's a bunch of it that's just a blank screen but I can clearly tell people are saying something, but can't decipher it-- and none of Chaifetz' commentary in between is captioned or transcribed either, though it's sort of summarized in the video description.

Would anyone be willing to transcribe that? Everyone's linking this video on Tumblr today (often with commentary like "YOU NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS!"), but my auditory processing is absolutely shot today so I'm not getting the full picture whatsoever...

EDITED TO ADD: 'minionier' on Tumblr has posted a full transcription of the video (albeit with a lot of 'indistinct' parts; apparently even people with normal hearing can't make out some of it, which is at least good to know). This clarifies a lot regarding the context for the specific clips that were shown-- Chaifetz' web site gives the context in textual form but not the transcription of the clips, and vice versa for the video.

Mollena, a kink educator, just posted a video called PSA; what not to say to kinky women of color. Unfortunately, I can't parse most of it because the audio is ... I don't know the word for it. Blown out? That thing where bad mics make a lot of buzz and clip sounds? ... plus it's off-sync from the video, ahhh, my brain can't process it. And youtube's auto-captions are not at all helpful, as per usual.

If anyone could help out, I'd appreciate it!

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could transcribe all or part of this QUEER101 comic. My brain struggles with following comics, let alone transcribing them. It is text heavy, but most of the meaning is in the text, so whilst bits of description are helpful, even a transcript of the text only would work at least for now.

I was introduced to this community by trouble. I'm excited to see this community and I hope I'll be able to help out too!

There is this great YouTube series that someone is doing that I'd really love to get the first episode transcribed at least. It's called Virgie Tovar's Fat Girl Guide to Life.

From what I've read, this definitely deserves to be transcribed. I couldn't even watch it till I got back to my computer (in fact, I had no idea there even was supposed to be a video on the page, as they didn't even bother to put a "you must be using a platform for which Flash is available" message) and now that I am back at a computer I'm too tired to really process speech coherently.

Anyway, here's the URL, for someone who wants to take on transcription. I may work on it myself when I have a chance, but I wish I could just play the stream directly rather than in a Flash widget so I could use my transcription controls on it.

Edited to add: We need a "speech" genre tag.

Edited again to add: Turns out that the Thinking Person's Guide to Autism blog is posting transcripts in serialized form. Here's part 1 and part 2.
