Nobody's posted here for months! If anybody's still reading ... VOTE this Thursday, i.e. tomorrow (assuming you're registered; it's too late now if not).

tactical voting guide (of course, you might know better; I disagree with them about Colchester, where I'm far from the only person who will never vote again for the former MP who voted for the Health and Social Care Act 2012).

If you already know who you want to vote for and you're certain they won't win, or that they'll win easily and don't need your vote, vote anyway! On the one hand, several recent elections and referenda prove that nobody knows anything in politics nowadays; on the other, one day electoral reform will be debated in Parliament again and the more egregious the gap between votes and seats is, the more seriously they might take it. If you don't vote, you will be ignored.

Pretty much whoever you voted for, you've probably noticed that our voting system is a big mess. The Electoral Reform Society and Unlock Democracy are running a joint campaign to do something about it, with a petition which is to be handed in on May 18th: Make Seats Match Votes.

London bus checker app

London-centred question!

Which Android app (preferably free, but I'm not ruling out paying for it) would you recommend for bus checking? Next bus at a given stop, bus route, favourite stops, that kind of thing.

I'm fairly new to this "there's an app for that" business, and a bit stressed about phone security. I'm looking for an app that's easy to use, doesn't have too much information overload, ideally no ads.

The TfL website provides all this info, of course, but by the time it loads a page the bus has already come.

I have not been very organised about this yet, but there will be at least something at my place on Saturday 25th in the morning with marina, and on Saturday 1st Sept in the afternoon with skud. I'm planning to run a meet-up for the LJ community northwest_fen in December, and am trying to work out a date for that. People think it's a good idea for me to amalgamate the meet with DW fans from the area, so this is what this post is about.

Can anyone here make a fannish meet in central Manchester? I can provide crash space for a few people if needed. The date isn't finalised yet, so you're welcome to have input! Blood donation

The lifetime ban on blood donation by men who've had sex with men (MSM) is lifted today, though a 12-month deferral period remains. The National Blood Service Donor Health Check online questionnaire has been edited to reflect this.

What they HAVEN'T done is edited it to take into account the bit where it's obviously silly for a woman not to be able to donate blood because she's having sex with an MSM who can (the questionnaire still asks if you are a woman who has in the past 12 months had sex with a man who has ever had sex with another man, and tells you you're ineligible to donate if the answer's "yes").

However, I've just got off the phone with the Blood Service and they confirm that in the situation I describe - a woman having sex with an MSM who is eligible to donate blood - the woman *is also* eligible to donate.

Y'know, just in case this is useful to anyone else. :-)

Yes, I know the social implications of the 12-month deferral are problematic. I'm also painfully aware that I've been using binary-gendered language throughout this post - for which I'm sorry, but the NBS unfortunately does not seem to be entirely competent at trans* people.

I've just moved to London and I'm looking for a flatmate or two. The ideal flat would be within commuting distance of Shoreditch - 40-45 minutes being a reasonable commute time. Somewhere on the Northern line would be great, or on a bus route and near-ish a bus station.

NotW's boss Rupert Murdoch is trying to take over BSkyB and the government wants to let him. 38 Degrees will hand in a petition tomorrow, which you can find at their site: No time to give Murdoch more power.
