Clamshell is the industry standard for beauty, glamour, and headshot photography because it flatters nearly all faces. The symmetrical arrangement of lights (one above, one below) creates even illumination that minimizes wrinkles, shadows under eyes, and unflattering contours. It's called 'clamshell' because the two lights together resemble a clamshell opening around the subject's face.
The setup requires two light sources of similar intensity, making it slightly more equipment-heavy than single-light setups but the results are consistently professional and flattering across all face shapes and ages.
