The 'compression' is technically not caused by the lens itself — it's caused by camera position. A telephoto lens requires the photographer to stand farther away from the subject to achieve the same framing as a wide-angle lens. This greater camera-to-subject distance changes the perspective: elements at different distances appear proportionally closer to each other. The lens focal length determines how far away you must stand; the distance causes the compression.
This is why the effect is properly called 'perspective compression' — it's a perspective change driven by camera position. But in practical photography, 'longer lens = more compression' is accurate because longer lenses require greater shooting distance.
