This website was created because I wanted to generate a website full of information for window managers. The idea was to make a collection of installation instructions, tips, quirks, extra software and related links. I found a youtube channel that was using Material for MKDocs, I had my fun there but having lost a backup and being too lazy to restart I gave it up. Then I came across Hugo and became interested in playing around with HTML and CSS to make crazy themes. When the theming novelty faded out I stopped playing around and started to actually write posts.
Ever so often I would create a new section on my site and would find some styling error or inconsistency. At first I adapted the rulesets to fit the new structure, but after enough times of doing this I decided to re-do the rules. This made me realize that I did not need some of the rules in the first place, so I re-wrote the styles completely and without knowing I began following the Brutalist Web Design rules.
- Don’t be influenced by tools
- Use a system font and only one
- Write clean code
- Write your own CSS
- Don’t use Javascript (if you can avoid it)
- Don’t hack the scrollbar
- Don’t create custom cursors
- Don’t use an effect just because you can (especially fade effects)
- Have as little design as possible
- Make navigation obvious or not at all
- Be practical rather than pretty
- Don’t use gradients or shadows
- Use high contrast colours
Man, they make so much sense. The site is just simpler and faster to navigate, and don’t get me wrong, websites can be colorful, fancy and be fast and easy as well. Its just that focusing almost exclusively in function makes maintaining the site less of a pain.
After a long time of using Hugo I moved to Zine. This was because of Hugo’s breakage frequency on new versions. You can find the source of the Hugo site in Codeberg.
This website also tries to follow some accessibility guidelines and if you find something wrong that I could do better please make sure to contact me.
