If a compiler job requires grinding these days I probably wouldn’t get one. All that was necessary 5-10 years ago seemed straightforward: take compilers and/or computer architecture class, tinker with LLVM, pass coding/compilers interview. Perhaps because it wasn’t as popular?

That stuff has been on the verge of mainstream acceptance for at least past 20 years (Virtual Machines by Smith & Nair, 2005). Arguably it’s now closer than ever with Intel LBR for 0-overhead sampling, Linux eBPF for sample attribution/aggregation, and LLVM BOLT for optimization

I'm embarrassed to say it, but I didn't have a robust intuition about stack frames, unwinding and exception handling stuff (CIE, FDE, CFI, eh_frame and especially all things DWARF). This great note made it much clearer: lesenechal.fr/en/linux/unwin…

I've been working on CMake magic to fully automatically apply BOLT to Clang, similar to how PGO two-stage build is automated with CMake cache file. It appears that fully automatically BOLT-optimized Clang is ~30% faster than the Release (-O3) Clang: reviews.llvm.org/D132975

Compiler industry has all but converged to LLVM. The power of good design (IR-first + component/library organization), business-friendly license, and persistence plus charisma of Chris Lattner.

RIP the classic #Intel C++ Compiler. You will be missed. It's been removed from #oneAPI 2024.

Why C++ JIT would make a lot of sense: ~80% of code is cold, i.e. never- or exceedingly rare- executed, and shouldn't be compiled in the first place. Effort is spent compiling it (with O3), then linking, then loading. From Propeller ASPLOS paper snehasish.net/assets/pdf/she…

Compiler engineers work on different things but I'm closer to juicing perf out of CPUs. The best way to learn is by doing (something useful). Grep sources of your favorite project and find comments with TODO. BOLT has open ideas list:

Below is the list of BOLT project ideas with a brief description of each. Once a project is picked for active development, expect to start a new topic and file an RFC when suitable. Comment on this...

Yes, “retire” the only competent CEO in a decade and install CFO as interim, signature Intel move. I can just wish BOD would pick home-grown technical talent for the next CEO, or lure TSM/AMD/NVDA chief execs into the job.
