Your Data

Slow Reader is a local-first app. Your feeds, posts, and settings live on your device. You can use the app without an account.

Cloud

If you create a cloud account to sync your devices, the app encrypts your data on your device before sending it to our server. Only your devices have the key, so we can’t read your data.

The app gives you a random user ID instead of asking for your email or name. We can’t connect your account to you or track you by it.

The server needs some data unencrypted to sync your devices. This is all the unencrypted data it has:

• the random user ID;
• a hash of your password;
• random IDs of your devices;
• when you created the account;
• when, from which device, and how much encrypted data your devices send.

We keep this data until you delete it. The Delete your data from the cloud button on the Cloud page deletes all of it immediately.

Loading Feeds

Without the Slow Reader browser extension, the web app downloads feeds through our proxy, because browsers block direct requests to other websites. The proxy doesn’t record which feeds you read.

Analytics

We count page views with Plausible Analytics running on our own server. It doesn’t use cookies, doesn’t count unique visitors, and doesn’t store your IP address or other personal data.

Our analytics are open for everyone to review.

Tracking

We don’t use cookies or other ways to track you. We don’t share any information about you with advertisers, marketing companies, or anyone else.

Logs

We don’t write your IP address or other personal data to our logs.

Hosting

Our servers run at Hetzner in the EU. You can read Hetzner’s privacy policy.

Agreement

By creating a cloud account, you agree to this policy. Sync can’t work without the unencrypted data listed in the Cloud section, so there is no way to have a cloud account with less data.

If you don’t want our analytics, you can host Slow Reader yourself. Analytics is disabled in the self-hosted version.
