AI Assist is an AI-powered, conversational search and discovery tool that prioritizes trusted, community-verified knowledge before other sources. It is linked on the left navigation of all Stack Exchange network sites, and can also be used directly from the Stack Overflow home page.

The AI Assist conversational search and discovery tool
Using AI Assist
Enter your prompt or question into the tool. The prompt can include as much detail and context as you wish. Follow-up prompts in the same AI Assist session will retain previous prompts and responses as context, creating a back-and-forth conversational experience.
Responses may include answers from Stack Overflow and other Stack Exchange network sites. A link for each answer is provided so that you can view the full context of the question and answer, and upvote answers that you find to be helpful.
Responses may also include AI-generated and summarized information. If suitable answers were not found on Stack Overflow or other Stack Exchange network sites, the response may also include information sourced from the broader internet via LLM partner integrations.
Saving and sharing conversations
For logged-in users, previous conversations remain accessible on the left navigation and can be resumed at any time.
Conversations can also be shared with others via the “Share” function in the upper right corner. This will generate a unique URL showcasing the entire conversation.
Importing chats
In some cases, you may have already engaged with another conversational search tool or LLM about the topic you’re investigating. Using the instructions found on the “Import chat” option on the left navigation, you can export that off-site conversation and import it into AI Assist so you don’t have to start from scratch.
Still stuck?
Asking the Stack Overflow community directly is always an option! Click on the “Ask the community” button at the top of the right sidebar to begin writing a question. Review this Help Center article for further guidance. Note that AI-generated content may not be posted on Stack Overflow.
