Nuestros principales diferenciadores

The sovereign answer to Big Tech
Global developments in 2025 accelerated interest in sovereignty. Nextcloud responded with its first Digital Sovereignty summit, featuring Nextcloud Awards and four enterprise day events, showing big momentum at two events in the Netherlands and large public sector deployments in France. In November, Nextcloud pledged to invest €250 million in digital sovereignty by 2030.
Introducing workflow management
2024 marked the introduction of a big step forward for workflow management in Nextcloud Hub with the new Nextcloud Flow. Collaborations with hosting companies, such as IONOS, brought support for AI-as-a-Service to the Nextcloud AI Assistant. In December, Nextcloud launched a much-improved version of Nextcloud Talk, designed to take on Microsoft Teams directly. The team is now spread across 25 countries.
100th team member
The year opened with a number of European public organizations moving to Nextcloud, including Europe's Data Protection Supervisor.
In December 2023, Nextcloud reached 100 team members. Our global team spans over 20 countries working remotely or in our offices in Berlin and Stuttgart. Our growth has continued to drive innovation, including the industry-first integration of Ethical AI capabilities in an on-premises collaboration platform. The Roundcube email project joins Nextcloud.
Expanded integration
In 2022, backed by several public sector customers, Nextcloud expanded its collaboration with technology partner Collabora. The company introduced Nextcloud Office, bringing much better integration of collaborative document editing capabilities. A deeper collaboration with OpenProject brought more advanced project management to Nextcloud customers and other partnerships integrated WebEX and the NUITEQ Stage Whiteboard.
With an estimated over 300.000 Nextcloud servers online, no other on-premises content collaboration platform comes close in terms of installed base.
Building an ecosystem
Over the preceding year, Nextcloud doubled bookings again, and continued to invest in expansion. Building on the new integration technologies that came to Hub in 2021, Nextcloud expanded its partner ecosystem agressively. These icluded collaborations with Deutsche Telekom, Univention and OpenXchange, Canonical and Collabora, OpenProject, IONOS, TrueNAS and others.
While the product and ecosystem continued to evolve quickly, a coalition of 30 businesses and civil society organizations under leaership of Nextcloud filed a complaint with the European Commission about the gate keeping by Microsoft.
Introduction of Hub
By 2020, Nextcloud completed its transition from a secure file exchange solution to a full collaboration platform with the introduction of Hub. Nextcloud Hub brings together Nextcloud Files, Talk and Groupware in a single, integrated productivity suite that empowers modern, digital organizations. Later in the year, Nextcloud responded to unprecedented demand by scaling up its video and chat capabilities for larger groups and with features specifically aimed at remote learning and day-to-day interactions of remote workers. The year ended with a series of integrations with Microsoft, Google, Slack, Moodle, Jira, Dropbox and others that also resulted in easy one-click migration tools helping users move from propietary platforms to Nextcloud.
Increasing awareness
Rising global tensions including trade disputes, debates over digital taxes in Europe, the US CLOUD act and the GDPR fueled interest in Nextcloud, with both the French and German federal government rolling out the sovereign file sharing solution to its employees. The product evolved particularly in the security area, introducing remote wipe, watermarking and AI powered login protection. The year ended up doubling order intake and customer base over 2018.
Becoming leader
By January 2018, after record growth in 2017, Nextcloud had become the most sought-after Enterprise File Sync and Share solution according to Google Trends and was widely recognized as leading the on-premises Enterprise File Sync and Share industry. And, after over a year of development, in January 2018 Nextcloud Talk was introduced. The German Federal Government deployed Nextcloud, as did many cities across Europe. This year also saw Simple Signup gear up to 250 signups per day.
Record growth
Fully employee-funded and pursuing an organic-growth strategy, Nextcloud already turned profitable by the end of 2016 and had nearly tripled to 35 employees by the end of 2017. The team had organized two successful Nextcloud Conferences and a dozen hack week meetings, pushed out no less than 1 major and 18 minor releases with innovations like Global Scale, gained many new partners and closed major commercial deals including the Technical University of Berlin and the Raiffeisen bank's IT center.
Founding
Nextcloud was started in June 2016 by Frank Karlitschek and Niels Mache and a dozen experienced open source entrepreneurs and engineers to empower users to take back control over their data and communication. We envisioned our company to develop the next generation open source Enterprise File Sync and Share and have been relentlessly pursuing that vision, raising the bar for self-hosted solutions.
