Purchase options and add-ons
Fully updated to the latest CSS modules, make the journey to CSS mastery as simple and painless as possible. This book dives into advanced aspects of CSS-based design, such as responsive design, modular CSS, and CSS typography. Through a series of easy-to-follow tutorials, you will learn practical CSS techniques you can immediately start using in your daily work.
CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions is your indispensable guide to cutting-edge CSS development―this book demystifies the secrets of CSS. While CSS is a relatively simple technology to learn, it is a difficult one to master. When you first start developing sites using CSS, you will come across all kinds of infuriating browser bugs and inconsistencies. The range of possibilities seems endless and makes for a steep and daunting learning curve.
While most books concentrate on basic skills, this one is different, assuming that you already know the basics and why you should be using CSS in your work, and concentrating mainly on advanced techniques. About the Author
Emil Björklund is the Technical Director at digital design consultancy inUse, where he’s usually busy building websites―or helping clients and co-workers better their craft. Emil created his first HTML page on Geocities in 1997, but got confused by the mess of table tags. Coming back to the web in 2001, he found this magical thing called CSS and has been fascinated by it ever since. For the last decade, Emil has been building websites professionally, hacking on anything from client-side JavaScript to server-side Python, but always with a special place in his heart for good old HTML and CSS. Emil’s writing and advice on CSS has been published in Net Magazine and on CSS Tricks. He also writes about (mostly) web-related stuff on his blog at thatemil.

About the authors

Andy Budd is a designer turned investor, advisor, and coach. For many years he ran Clearleft, an award-winning design consultancy that pioneered the field of user experience design in the U.K. During this time he helped clients like Just Eat, Farfetch, Rapha, Funding Circle, Mozilla, Virgin Atlantic, Penguin Books, and Burberry make the most of their digital experience. Andy sold Clearleft in 2020 and joined Seedcamp—one of the most successful and best-known early stage venture funds in Europe—as a venture partner. As well as helping source and review new investments, Andy uses his knowledge of Sales-, Marketing-, and Product-Led Growth to help portfolio companies prepare for Series A and beyond. His latest book—The Growth Equation—was born out of that experience: witnessing all the things startups get right (and occasionally get wrong) about early stage growth.
In addition to working for Seedcamp, Andy advises a small number of founders on the concepts found in his book. He also runs a syndicate of design and product angels who love nothing more than supporting Design- and Product-Led founders. In his spare time Andy—a former dive instructor and “shark wrangler”—loves exploring underground cave systems and tropical atolls. As a recently qualified pilot, when he’s not under the water he can be found soaring over the Sussex countryside in a rented Cessna 172.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2018Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseAbsolutely excellent book. So well written and displayed on the page. I would recommend everything about this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2018Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI am a software developer, and wanted to get a better handle on CSS just so my user interfaces wouldn't be so plain. I expected this to be pretty straight-forward, but it turns out to be way more complex than I expected! This book did a good job explaining how the many features of CSS are used, the examples were clear and there was helpful information about browser support, performance considerations, etc. I learned a lot from this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2016Format: PaperbackAbsolutely excellent book! If you have some CSS experience and want to learn more or you know CSS and want to learn good techniques and about the new additions to CSS3. Then this book is for you. Heck, anyone doing any CSS should read this book. Covers the old standard topics and the new CSS3 topics in detail. Provides best practices and has a lot of links to good references.
I will probably go back and reread this book since it had so much great material!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI appreciate how the authors work to keep granular deep dives from getting numbing.
Even though the book is now dated (10 years old), the focus on fundamentals helps it hold its value.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2018Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book is an up-to-date and comprehensive overview of advanced CSS. There's a lot of good information, and there are lots of references to websites and standards documents for more detailed information.
Unfortunately, the author is not very good at explaining things. His descriptions are wordy and convoluted. Even when reading about things that I already understand well, I got confused by his explanations.
I recommend this book for anyone who wants to come up to speed on the latest advances in CSS, but I am hoping something bitter comes along soon.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 11, 2017Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseGreat follow up to the first one. Many of the examples from first are reused here with new examples for the modern stuff such as flexbox. I really like his style; its clear, brisk, and the examples work. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2020Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is a comprehensive treatment of CSS. It can be difficult to follow at times, but so is CSS.

Cliente AmazonReviewed in Italy on December 19, 20195.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book. High quality contents.
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI'm a computer engineer and I purchased this book to improve and update my knowledge about css and related stuffs. I had recently read another book on the subject, a beginner book and this goes very more inside the matter, and helped me to undestand behind the hood and in the meanwhile it has provided a lot of pratical examples. Simply awesome the chapter 7, especially robuste float layout boosted with flexbox and modernizr, or responsive images and so much more.
The book isn't simple, it's for an intermediate/advanced level and a previous basic lecture about css is mandatory (it's enough w3cschool for example). For me it was also more complicated for the language, I am not native English speakers and there are a lot of typical expressions and proverbs that slow down the lecture but all in all the book is clear and well written.
In my opinion the only defect of this book is that are missing excercises for the reader but many book are like that.
Fully satisfied
ShammyBReviewed in the United Kingdom on October 29, 20175.0 out of 5 stars Takes a lot for a CSS book to be better than just browsing MDN/WC3School, but this book does it
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI'm a SPA (currently React) Developer, spoiled for years by working in large development teams where component CSS and layout mockups were always done by the UX dev on the team.
That all changes when you move to a smaller team or become contract (as I have done); I needed to get really good as CSS really quickly.
this is one of two books that did it, the other one being Pro CSS3 Layout Techniques.
I've also reviewed the other book, so you may want to look at that (link above) to see why these two books are the ones to go for.
Be aware that this is a pro book so not for beginners; a good thing if like me you are a knowledgeable dev who wants to up their game rather than learn from the basics.
Overall well worth the money. A very good desktop reference with far better editorial than the stuff you find on the web (the book has essentially already done all the leg work for you and all the specs, gotchas and tricks are here as a handy and well edited hard copy!).
Special mention to the seller, Wordery who immediately sent out another copy when the first one got lost in the post;
no quibbles and I noted the issue on a Saturday, and it was in my hands on the Monday!
