From the Back Cover
This book shows you how to configure SQL Server and design your databases to support a given instance and workload. You will learn advanced configuration options, in-memory technologies, storage and disk configuration, and more, all aimed toward enabling your desired application performance and throughput.
Configuration doesn’t stop with implementation. Workloads change over time, and other impediments can arise to thwart desired performance. High Performance SQL Server covers monitoring and troubleshooting to aid you in detecting and fixing production performance problems and minimizing application outages. You will learn about a variety of tools, ranging from the traditional wait analysis methodology to the query store or indexing, and you will learn how improving performance is an iterative process.
This book is an excellent complement to query performance tuning books and provides the other half of what you need to know by focusing on configuring the instances on which mission-critical queries are executed.
- Understand SQL Server's database engine and how it processes queries
- Configure instances in support of high-throughput applications
- Provide consistent response times to varying user numbers and query volumes
- Design databases for high-throughput applications with focus on performance
- Record performance baselines and monitor SQL Server instances against them
- Troubleshot and fix performance problems

- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis valuable book should be read by any SQL developer looking to understand the configuration and performance of a SQL Server instance and its internal relational engine which is continuously refined to take advantage of advances in storage and memory technologies.
High-level but very comprehensive info on SQL Server (all versions but esp. 2019 and 2022).
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2021Format: PaperbackWe as DBAs are always goggling for our issues and questions. That is so, because not all books have everything a DBA needs for a high performing SQL environment(and who doesn't?).
All chapters are extremely well written. The good and accurate writing follows an awesome flow.
The good news is that you can look at individual chapters without being interested in the other chapters and yet get your money's worth out of the book.
My favorite chapter were: Part II - Chapter 3 about the SQL Server Configuration. Lot of times, as DBAs we get handed a server which are not up to our desired standards. We can now go to the infra team, armed with this knowledge and help ourselves get a good server.
The next chapter that is my favorite, and I bet he can write one full book on this is the Chapter 5. Analyzing Wait Stats. I have spent inordinate amount of time analyzing these on the fly while facing some real time production issues. You don't want to miss this.
I wish Ben can also create an audio post of these so we can listen to them while driving and such.
I have heard and seen Ben speak at many of our SQL events. This book is pretty much a solid reflection of his mastery of the subject and his ability to explain it to the mortal DBAs.
I wish him all the very best for this and future books.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2021Format: PaperbackOne of the technical books that sit on my work desk at arm’s length as a resource book is Benjamin Navarez’s book on SQL Server performance, High Performance SQL Server: Consistent Response for Mission-Critical Applications.
I have the first edition of this book.
There are 2 new chapters in the new edition: SQL Server on Linux & Intelligent Query Processing. All the other chapters are also updated. The total number of new pages is at around 120 according to the author. And what I like with the new edition is that the chapters are divided among Part Headings which gives a good flow of the content.
Do I recommend this book?
Yes, that’s for sure!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2021Format: PaperbackLately we have been doing 2019 upgrades from 2016, (skipping 2017) and this book was very helpful in performance analysis, I would still recommend this to every DBA out there to have in your shelf. The first part is almost same as the first edition, but the later chapters including 2019 topics and differentiation between older version just saves so much of Google and reading time. If you ask me, Do you recommend to your friend, YES!!!! Go for it.. Thanks Author ✍️

The high performance SQL Server book is a MUST to have for any DBA or database analysts who deal with Sql Server database administration. Beyond our years of experience, having a reference copy of this helps add value to the job in much better scale. My 5 stars to Benjamin and his books.. I add this to my collection and read it completely.
