The Waverly-Shell Rock boys tennis team defeated Aplington-Parkersburg 6-3 in their season-opening meet on Tuesday, April 21. Despite the fact that the Go-Hawks were kicking off their season against a talented team who had already had four meets this season, a sweep of the three doubles matches helped the Go-Hawks move to 1-0 on the season.
Ella Wilker stepped onto the runway and stared down at the sand-filled pit just past the south endzone in Buchman Stadium at Western Dubuque High School. Wilker sat in first place in the long jump at the Bobcat Relays with a new season-best mark of 17-03, and was set to take her final attempt of the evening. Unlike most regular season meets, however, Wilker had more on her mind than placing first on that Thursday, April 16 night.
