Open Source is infrastructure. It’s time we treat it that way. Open-source projects like Jenkins power the modern world, yet the people who maintain them, with reviewing code, fixing security bugs, and supporting users, often do so as "volunteers" without formal recognition or legal protection. In Germany, a new initiative is calling for a major shift: recognizing Open Source contribution as "Ehrenamt" (voluntary work/civil engagement). Currently, thousands of maintainers invest their time into critical digital infrastructure, but this work isn't recognized fiscally or structurally in the same way as traditional volunteering. This initiative seeks to change German legislation to better support the sustainability of the OSS ecosystem. Why does this matter for Jenkins? Jenkins is a community-driven project. We are incredibly proud of our strong German contributor base, including members of our Governance Board like Alexander Brandes and Daniel Krämer, and our Events Officer, Stefan Spieker. Their work (and yours!) is vital, and we believe the legal frameworks should reflect that importance. Whether you are in Germany or elsewhere, the conversation about open-source sustainability affects us all. 📖 Read the full blog post by Stefan Spieker to learn more about the petition and how you can support it: https://lnkd.in/eV8HSF56 #Jenkins #OpenSource #OSS #SoftwareDevelopment #DevOps #Ehrenamt #Sustainability #TechCommunity #DigitalInfrastructure

Reposting a well written write-up on building a first Jenkins plugin: "What I Learned Building My First Jenkins Plugin" by Mehdi Abaakouk, Mergify. Whether you're thinking about extending Jenkins or just curious about plugin development, this post covers the real-world lessons, challenges, and unexpected quirks that come with the process. Super useful for anyone diving into Jenkins plugin dev. 👏 Kudos to the author for sharing such a practical perspective. https://lnkd.in/gZQ28-e6
💡 Mehdi Abaakouk thought building a Jenkins plugin would take a weekend. Instead, it turned into: ⚡ a crash course in Java ⚡ a deep dive into Jenkins internals ⚡ one of the toughest (and best) code reviews he's had The surprise? Publishing a plugin wasn’t paperwork — it was mentorship. And now Jenkins users can stream job events straight into Mergify CI Insights! https://lnkd.in/eWJAwZtt
