Setting up ChatGPT (OpenAI)
← Back to the getting started guide
This guide explains how to connect OpenAI’s ChatGPT to Atlassian Rovo MCP server, enabling AI-assisted workflows across Atlassian products. ChatGPT can help you summarize content, answer questions about project work, and generate insights from connected data sources.
You no longer need to be in developer mode in ChatGPT to add the Atlassian Rovo MCP connector.
Before you begin
Make sure you have:
An Atlassian cloud site with Jira, Compass, and/or Confluence
A ChatGPT account
A modern browser to complete the authentication flow
Step 1: Add the Atlassian Rovo MCP server connector in ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT in your browser.
In ChatGPT, go to your profile → Settings.
Select Apps & Connectors.
From the list of apps, select Atlassian Rovo.
Select Connect.
In the confirmation screen that appears, select Continue.
Select the Atlassian apps you want ChatGPT to access, then select Approve.
Select the site you want ChatGPT to access, then select Accept.
Step 2: Use the integration
In ChatGPT, open a new chat.
Select the + button → More → Atlassian Rovo. This adds Atlassian Rovo to your chat.
Ask ChatGPT to do something like:
Summarize the latest Confluence page about our Q4 planning. If configured correctly, ChatGPT will respond using data pulled from your Atlassian workspace.
Where you can use it in ChatGPT
Atlassian Rovo MCP server is supported across ChatGPT experiences:
General chat mode: Use Rovo MCP tools directly in a standard chat after selecting the connector.
Deep research mode: Invoke Rovo MCP tools while running deep research to pull context from Jira, Confluence, or Compass.
Agent mode: Allow agents to call Rovo MCP tools as part of multi-step tasks.
You enable the connector from within the chat interface. If your organization uses policies that limit connectors or tool usage, you may need admin approval.
Troubleshooting
Issue | Possible cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
ChatGPT can't access Atlassian data | Connector not authorized | Reauthorize ChatGPT via your profile → Settings → Apps & Connectors. |
