The emergence of AI has been the center of attraction on the web since the release of the first GPT language models by OpenAI in November 2022. As a result, there’s been a growing interest within the tech community to explore the potential of generative AI technologies in web development.

In this course, join instructor Sandy Ludosky as she provides an introduction to generative AI and its many possible applications using the JavaScript language and its frameworks. Explore the core concepts of generative AI with practical, hands-on examples. Sandy shows you how to build an AI-powered chatbot with Node.js and then extend the chatbot’s capabilities by allowing it to call external APIs with function calling. By the end of this course, you’ll also be ready to build an AI-powered virtual assistant with the OpenAI Assistants API.

    Some of the contents are out of date or no longer accurate. This is just the nature of a fast-moving platform such as OpenAI. If you are following along with the examples: 1. When creating an assistant (chapters 4 and 5), the option of uploading files for "retrieval" (v1) is being retired. To make the example work, you can pin the OpenAI version to fall back to v1, e.g., npm install openai@4.36.0. See migration notes at https://platform.openai.com/docs/assistants/migration 2. Additionally, if you ran the program a few times, you might accumulate some files (e.g., faq_abc.txt) in your OpenAI account because it uploads the file at each invocation of npm start without setting expiration of the files. Make sure you go to https://platform.openai.com/storage/ and clean them up when you are ready to tear down the exercise. With that said, I still find this short introduction to OpenAI well-designed and clearly explained with the practical examples.
