Symphony

Green Line E Branch: Symphony station is closed for major accessibility upgrades. Riders can use Prudential or Northeastern to access E Branch service. The station is expected to reopen in 2029.

Alternate Service Options:
• Riders who typically board or disembark at Symphony can instead board or disembark at Northeastern University or Prudential, which are 0.3 miles away (or about a five-minute walk) from Symphony.
• Riders are encouraged to instead consider travelling on the Orange Line at Massachusetts Avenue, which is 0.1 miles (or about a three-minute walk) from Symphony.
• Riders may also use the Route 39, which operates parallel to the E branch in both directions along Huntington Avenue.

Background:
Currently, there are no step-free pathways from the entrances to the platforms at Symphony, and the station is not able to be accessed by people with wheeled mobility devices. When construction is complete in spring 2029, Symphony will be enhanced with four new accessible elevators, raised platforms for easier boarding, accessible bathrooms, improved wayfinding, more lighting, and upgraded safety features, making the station safer and easier to use for all riders.

Back Bay ↔ Forest Hills

Orange Line: Shuttle buses will replace service between Back Bay and Forest Hills from September 10 - 14 to allow for work on the Ruggles Station Improvement Project.

Accessibility:
All shuttle buses are accessible to riders with disabilities. However, some buses used during weekday periods will be lift-equipped, coach-style buses. All shuttle buses operating on weekends will be ramp-equipped, low-floor buses.

Fare-Free Commuter Rail Alternative:
Riders are encouraged to consider the Commuter Rail for service between Forest Hills, Ruggles, Back Bay, and South Station. The trip between Forest Hills and Back Bay on the Commuter Rail is approximately 10 minutes.

Travel Time:
Riders using shuttle bus service should budget extra travel time. For example, a rider traveling to Downtown Crossing from Forest Hills should allow for at least 30 minutes of travel in addition to their regular commute.

Scope of Work:
This is to allow for work on critical signal upgrades within the central Green Line tunnel.

Travel Time:
Riders should allow for ample extra travel time. Rider trip times are expected to be at least 20 minutes longer than usual.

Accessibility:
Accessible van service will be available for Green Line stops between Copley/Back Bay and North Station.

Bus Alternatives:
Route 39 Bus will be fare-free. This route runs parallel to the Green Line E Branch

Accessibility:
All shuttle buses are accessible to riders with disabilities. Shuttle buses operating this weekend will be ramp-equipped, low-floor buses. Accessible van service will also be available between JFK/UMass and Ashmont for riders who prefer it. Riders should see station personnel or use a station call box to request accessible van service.

Travel times:
Riders using shuttle buses during these service changes should budget ample extra travel time. For example, a rider travelling to Park Street from Ashmont should budget at least an additional 30 minutes of travel time in addition to their regular commute.

Blue Line: All trains will operate on the outbound/eastbound track between Wonderland and Revere Beach the weekend of September 26 – 27, for switch work.

Train service between Wonderland and Revere Beach will operate on the outbound (Wonderland) track approximately every 14 minutes. At Revere Beach, riders will board at the normal platform locations. Inbound service will continue beyond Revere Beach and operate normally to Bowdoin.

Wayfinding:
Riders are encouraged to follow directions via station signage and from onsite station personnel. Train predictions via countdown clocks will not be available between Wonderland and Revere Beach.

Fares:
No fares will be collected at Wonderland.

Travel Time:
Riders will experience longer wait times and should allow extra travel time during this work.

The escalator will remain out of service for the foreseeable future. This decision was made after a thorough inspection determined that corrosion on the escalator’s steel truss was so severe that it could not be repaired further and that a complete replacement of the escalator would be required. Replacing the escalator at this location requires a more extended unit meeting modern escalator safety requirements. This longer unit will require significant alteration to the station entrance to meet code requirements. The MBTA has currently begun design work to understand what station upgrades will be needed.
Due to these complexities, we expect the escalator will remain out of service for a significant time. We recognize the challenges this poses to our riders, and please know we are working to identify a solution as quickly as possible. In the meantime, Government Center Station, which is fully accessible and serves the Blue Line, is under a quarter-mile from Bowdoin Station.
