Mp3tag overview

Mp3tag is a powerful and easy-to-use tool to edit metadata of audio files. Musicians, DJs, podcasters, and audio-enthusiasts use it for many different aspects of handling audio files. It is created with the intention to make simple tasks easy and complex tasks possible.

It supports batch tag-editing for multiple files at once, covering many audio formats from MP3, over MP4, and M4V (yes, that’s video!) to FLAC, OGG, OPUS, AIF, DSF, MPC, and WAV.

Since some of the tasks in managing a digital library are repetitive, Mp3tag allows for combining tasks into action groups, which serve as workflows for keeping consistency and order. Examples are formatting tag fields, performing case conversion, removing unwanted fields, or adjusting embedded cover art to match required sizes.

Key Features
  • Bulk-Editing of Tags for multiple files at once.
  • Importing metadata from online Tag Sources (e.g., Discogs and MusicBrainz).
  • Editing of cover-art.
  • Renaming files based on tags.
  • Importing metadata from filenames.
  • Assign track and disc numbers via the auto-numbering wizard.
  • Support for Flexible Tagging, allowing for user-defined tag fields in a standardized way.
  • Applying action groups with many tasks combined into reusable workflows.
  • Support for many file types under a universal user interface.

Mp3tag was designed to support management of the metadata that is embedded in music files, but its capabilities go well beyond simple metadata editing. Despite its name, the files need not be MP3-encoded; Mp3tag works with (for example) m4a, ALAC, ogg, opus, wav, FLAC and most other encoding formats. One feature I've found very helpful is the batch processing mode; it enables metadata modifications to multiple files at once. Mp3tag supports adding "cover art" to any or all music files in a collection. It supports automation of metadata modifications and searching via 'regular expressions'! It even supports automated creation of playlists - based on metadata "filtering" over your entire music library. It's not only an incredibly well-designed app, the customer support is also excellent. The only downside I've found with Mp3tag is that it changes the way you view other applications you use; you begin to wonder, "Why isn't this other software as good as Mp3tag?" If you've got a large music library, Mp3tag can absolutely make a difference in how you access and use it. This review has gotten a bit wordy, but honestly - I've been amazed at the quality of Mp3tag. In closing, I also have a comment for MacUpdate regarding the rating format: Why do you *require* an input to the "What needs improvements" question? This seems presumptuous! And although I identified "Social Media" as the "What Needs Improvement" feature, in fact there is nothing I can think of that actually needs improvement.

Mp3tag is a very well-designed app with excellent customer support. Honestly, I've been amazed at how good it is! --- And I also have a comment for MacUpdate: Why do you *require* an input to the "What needs improvements" question? This seems presumptuous, but hopefully MacUpdate will take this part of my comment as my input for "What needs improvements at MacUpdate"!!
